ATI users: HUGE speed increase
I'm thrilled
A little while ago, I downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c. Today, I installed a beta catalyst 4.8 display driver from here
anyway, I've noticed a huge increase in speed while gaming. I mainly play Battlefield Vietnam, and I was surprised to see how much fps I've gained. I play at 1280 X 960 2XAA 2XAF (which makes the game look very nice) and on the map 'landing zone albany' I use to get fps in the mid 50's, and it was jittery. Now I get fps in the mid 70's and into the 80's, without any jittering or chopping what-so-ever.
I loaded up Hue Alt, where my fps use to chug and drop at certain points in the map, now it doesn't any more
my fps is way up on that map as well
I believe I was using catalyst 4.6 before i updated, with DirectX 9.0b. so if anyone hasn't updated directx/display drivers for a while, make sure you install the 4.8 betas. Sooo fast

Is this because of the directx, the 4.8 caty, or both?

2.4 Ghz, 4x256 RDRAM PC1066,
Radeon 9700 Non-Pro, 4.6
Catalysts, SB audigy 2, DSL

I've seen that dx 9c doesn't really have much benefit for 9700's or below. Anyone know if that's true or not? I'd love anything to make my fps better, but I don't want to screw up my system too much - I've seen that it's nigh impossible to remove dx 9c from your system, once installed.

Also, have you tried it with far cry? I notice a couple of slowdown points in that game, even with my 9800...
well I have a P4 2.4 Ghz which I've overclocked to 3.2 Ghz, 9800pro, gig of PC2100 ram, and an Audigy II.
I don't own farcry, so I wouldn't be able to say. sorry
and jeffro, i'm not sure if it was just the 4.8 betas which caused the increase in speed, or if it's from having 9.0c and 4.8 together.

updating directX won't mess your system up, even if you have an older video card. DX will add new features such as pixel shaders 2.0, but if your video card is older, it won't be able to use them. There are benefits to updating such as speed increases, though I'm not sure if 9.0c offers any

I just installed both last night, along with the new BFV patch... didn't really notice anything different, except that it still slows down if you enable eax, and I was only playing single player...
Of course, it's been awhile since I played BFV, so no point of reference really... forgot to try far cry... i'll post again with that

Wouldn't single player actually slow down your computer because of the AI?Originally posted by Rule of Wrist

You must be insane. Try the omega drivers. I get between 150 - 175 fps at all times, peaking at 200.
