Here's another tweak I found at another message board. I have no idea if it works or not.
"Here is the settings for Doom 3 that will improve the performance almost 10 times.
Go to the Doom 3\Base folder
Open DoomConfig.cfg with WordPad
Go to the following items and change them to match mine:
seta image_usecache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"
Save and exit the cfg file.
Next start Doom 3 and go to System settings, click the Advanced tab and turn everything on including VSync but turn off AntiAliasing.
Save and Exit Doom 3 and then Restart Doom 3, and everything should run much faster.
Before i used the tweak i was running on High Quality at 1024x768 and it was decent except for when alot of enemies ambushed me it lagged big time.
Afterwards i am now on Ultra High Quality at 1280x1024 and everything is smooth as can be, no slowdowns when there are a ton of enemies, just nice and smooth."

007, several people have tried that tweak and it does nothing. I tried it as well, but it improved nothing.
start the game, and when the main menu comes up, type:
timedemo demo1.demo usecache
it's doom3's benchmark utility. you can try it before that tweak, and after that tweak, and you'll notice that you get the same fps each time.
Harry, I bought doom3 a few days ago and applied the humus tweak. It really does work! When you apply the tweak, go into the ATI control panel and turn on Anisotropic filtering. (don't use the AF option in the game) if you turn on AF in the control panel along with using the humus tweak, you can play using AF and basically get no performance loss.
Make sure you guys turn off shadows though. on video cards that aren't the latest generation (x800 and 6800) the shadows slow down the cards a lot. the game is already dark enough, so it makes sense turning them off it means you can play at a higher resolution with AA and AF.

Cool!
I was wondering about the Humus tweek. I bought the game to take home today to Phoenix, I'll try it with and without.
Looks like everyone who's used it has some form of increase in fps!!!

Amaryl, you need to put a # symbol in front of the original line in the second screenshot (before the TEX). That will make it use the new line you've added, at which point it should all work right
i.e.
# perform a dependent table read for the specular falloff
# TEX R1, specular, texture[6], 2D;
POW R1, specular.x, specExp.x;

At least I got an Increase in fps but I would like to see where I am heading.
Off topic here but that sentence really made me laugh a good ol belly laugh.

I've tried cachemegs increase and didnt notice any significant diffrence. The value depends on how much ram you have you shouldnt set it to 256 if you only have 512 at least thats what I read. Should be like 1/4 or 1/3 of your total ram.
