No, far from a microphone holder. Grips are the backbone of film and tv, if it wasnt for grips, there wouldnt be any tv shows or movies. We do it all from set construction, to rigging, to cranes and safety. We also push camera dollys, and bend light with flags and stuff.
EDIT,
what would you like to know about The forgotten?, I really dont wanna spoil it for ya because its going to be a sick movie.
They also re-shot the whole end of the movie last month, it was an insane scene. It has something to do with an "Alien".
They also set up the ending for a sequel which is pretty cool.

I thought in order to do set construction you had to be born into it. How do you become a grip.

FYI people:
In the USA, a grip is a person responsible for the adjustment and maintenance of production equipment on the set. Their typical duties include laying dolly tracks or erecting scaffolding. In the UK, grips work exclusively with equipment that the camera is mounted on.

Thats Cool Wally that is what I started out wanting to do in college. I paid my first two years doing set design and construction for stage shows in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. To bad I joined the Military and never got back to it. I had some points toward my card but... wife kids no money started building houses instead of sets and ended up teaching.
