ATI or NVIDIA

Tue Feb 18, 2003 3:45 pm

Fellow gamers, I am going to upgrade my old computer, and wanted some feedback on video cards. ATI cards have been my choice for some time now, but a few friends have said the ti4600 for the money is a better card for gaming. The only thing I do with my old machine is game. What do you think?

i like nvidia myslef. I just think their cards are more reliable.
the ati 9700 pros are great performers though. they definitely beat out a ti 4600. they have come down considerably in price. I say if you really like nvidia, then you should stick with them. if you want the best performance from nvidia, you might want to wait to see what turns up from their new fx line of cards. There has been a lot of rumors and controversy over those cards as of late though.

Yeah, personally, especially if its an older computer I'dd try Nvidia because Nvidia tends to be more compatible. I know in my old computer it just had problems with the radeon, it was choppy at 70 Fps, Radeon support told me that I had no support for the card on my type motherboard. So I dunno, do your homework on facts about cards then add your loyalty to it and just go get one and try it.

My 64MB ATI Radeon 7500 Optimus is first real vidcard I've had, so that's all I can comment on. This after having old comp with built-in audio/video on motherboard (ugh).
My ATI isn't much compared to what some have here, but it more than does what I need (gaming) and it wasn't nearly as expensive either. If it has problems I haven't seen them yet. You probably already know about this card, but that is what I recommend, especially if you are on a budget. If you're looking for bigger, well...just ignore this.:D

Get the facts on the system:

http://www.hardocp.com they have reviews on MB and Video cards, I checked it our before buying my stuff, I have a Abit MB and a ATI 9500 and Im very happy, both of these got great reviews... With the ATI you get AA and AF this smooths out the jagged edges without suffering to much video loss also it can be over clocked, Awsome card, just make sure it is compatable with your mother board.

Ive had every 3d card you could possibly name , and my opinion is this . Find out when you might want to purchase the next card after this purchase. 1 year ?, 2 years and make your judgement on that. I decided to completely skip the Geforce 3 / 4 level of cards becouse I new the next real advancement in games was direct x 9 and the new doom engine. I bought the 9700 pro and I couldnt be happier. If you could wait a bit longer go for the new R350 coming out soon , that card will definately do job for the next 2 years and give you the satisaction to put money elsewhere ( processor mobo upgrades). As for Nvidia and Ati , I have become a real fan of Ati since my Radeon 7500 , I do not pick any one company over another , I love the competition between them , becouse were the ones that make out on the war. The FX card is a joke , late , loud and lame . Nvidia has recently came out telling oem's that they are just filling out preorders and thats all. So get the R350 or R300 when the price bottoms out , believe you"ll thank me later.

joke or not...the fx is still going to beat out the 9700 pro in every category. also they arent going to be loud. each manufacturer is going to make their own version of their card. chaintech is making one with cooling that puts out half of the sound that the original fx put out. give nvidia 6 months for the drivers and the 9700 pro wont even compare.

But E who wants to wait six months? And theres allways a lot of bugs to work out in the first run right? lol any way I keep seeing that its pulled out of prodution allready. At least the first run anyway. But to each there own.

Sorry bro your way off there, anadtech.com did a fabulous review considering there usually an Nvidia fansite. The FX is basicly an overclocked 5800 , its terribly loud and in most benchmarks in the 1600x1200 range and anything within 4,6AA and anio , the Fx is barley ahead and in most cases below the 9700 which is now 6 months old. Fx is only bieng supplied to pre-orders and thats it. Drivers or no drivers ,Nvidia got cought with there ass in the wind when they realized how good the 9700 really was and scrambled to somehow save face. I wouldnt discount the boys from California but for now ATI really is in good position and with the R350 coming out the same time as the FX , look for the FX to litterally get trampled on. See Anand's site and read his review , very well done.

no sorry bro your info is way old. ive already seen a preview of a chaintechs version of the card, it is going to put out less than 40 decibles. it wont be loud. also anandtech doesnt have decent drivers to test the fx. the 9700 pro has had over 6 months to perfect their drivers. the thing about nvidia not selling the fx is a rumor. yes you heard me a RUMOR. nvidia has denied them.

here is the link to the chaintech fx
