I TOTALLY disagree!
Playing battlefield42, max payne, half-life, etc...are in a controlled environment and are far from realistic.
I have yet to see a game where are objective is to shoot innocent children hostages.
I think, without assuming and forgive me if I am, that S.P. might refering to the fact that it can be ironic. Not an attempt to pass judgement upon anybody.
No one needs me to defend them at all. Nor am I attempting to do so.
I am only guessing at what they mean.
I think that playing war games has always been controversial. I do find war gaming ironic at times.
I certainly do not see anyone advocating the injury of innocents. I like others find it hard to see and hear about such actions.
Myself, I feel frustrated about it as I have stated prior. That will tend to make me ask wtf is going on in general.
As far as war-type-games. I have always played them and have no plans to stop. That is me personally.
I know some guys who after seeing combat or similar will never play BF, RtCW etc. or hunt. They have been affected somehow. Others will play because they view video war gaming, as you write , "a controlled enviro. and not realistic". Which I agree they are not realistic. But they are more visceral than some other wargames.
Chess is a war game- so is paintball.
I like both too.
I would say that this is a personal situation that affects each one differantly.
Enough spew from me -
