The best part: when word gets around that town, no one, I mean no one, is going to eat at that resteraunt. Good thinking folks, ruin your business over $5 or so.

If you have a large party, they are supposed to just figure in the tip. You usually have no choice in the matter.

Loin has that one right. Almost all restraunts that Ive been to has it in the menu that if your party is over 6 or 8 people, gratuity is automatically included in the check.

Where do six people eat for $71 in the first place. Did they really expect a big tip on that meal?

Wed Sep 15, 2004 3:13 pm

I bet what happened was that the gratuity was added to the check, they just didn't pay it.

Ya got to love america. They expect to be tipped if their service sucks...

The restaurant name & the owner's name is Soprano.

Could that have played a role in this incident?

:P

I was recently (june) on a road trip out west with a party of 6 and a lot of restaurants we ate at, had a mandatory tip percentage. Me and my buddy have issues with the whole mandatory tip thing, because the point is, if you have good service, you can tip appropriately. And if you have bad service, the same holds true..
I don't have a problem with tipping, I actually have been known to over tip most of the time. I realize the waiters/waitresses rely on this income. My problem is, don't tell me what I will "tip". I will be happy to tip if I get normal, decent service.
Actually, one time on the trip we were eating at this great mexican restaurant in Sedona, AZ and the waitress was out of this world. We didn't have to ask for refills on drinks, fufilled our special orders and generally catered to us hand and foot. Now, she actually lost out on a larger tip because we were forced to leave 18% when we would have gladly left 25% to her. But, to make a point, we only left the 18% that they required.

I asked a waiter at another place why they have this procedure and he said it is because a lot of places get a bunch or group of kids (teen-agers) will order all this food and then leave like a 2 dollar tip.
