A person from VU PR emailed my people today, saying my company will get Half Life 2 (plus others involved in First To Market program for software) no later than November 8th, so I will have the game tomorrow or Monday. But, our company cannot sell it to the public before November 16th, and, this is very important:

You require an internet connection to validate your game, even for single player. The Valve validation servers will not go online later than November 16th, 2004. 3AM Pacific Standard Time. At least, for North America anyway.

Unless some warez group cracks this, you're SOL if you think of getting it off BT or other file sharing places. :)

I kid you not, this is what I got in my work email today.
