i can get into a game now, but it crashes back to desktop after a couple minutes later

have you checked your allowrefreshrates setting in the video.con file?

This is what I had to change in order to play!

allowrefresh 1 allowed me to actually load the game...when it was set to 0 I couldn't even load it...
