Longhorn will be available in 32 bit and 64 bit editions (Intel & AMD). Hell WindowsXP has a 64 bit edition.


Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 = 5.0
Windows XP = 5.5
Windows "Longhorn" = 6.0


For the most part the kernel and underlying structure is the exception of much improved support for security at the kernel/driver/service levels.. A lot of changes in the application interface level and of course the new eye candy. The big deal is something called Avalon but thats beyond the scope of this conversation, and unfortunatly they've pretty much abandoned WFS as a complete file system replacement

Typical response from a developer who runs a program on one system and never tests it on another. Hello.... reality check.

Having worked for several software companies, this is the ultimate cat and mouse game, and the end user comment was rather ignorant to the extreme. Especially since I know you have had at least one problem with software in the past or with hardware for that matter in which it could of been the manufacture and not your problem.

As for longhorn, it was suppose to come out a lot earlier, say 2006, but the government has been threatening MS to pull its funding out of MS products and go to a linux/unix alternative due to the security issues. Way to much man power is being put into cleaning up viruses and the like. People say "well... that's just because Windows is more popular and the hackers attack that because there are more targets" which in a way is true. However, if you have ever gone in depth in a linux box, it is completely configureable, down to the code. In this aspect, you can create boxes that are unlike any other in the world, preventing the mass spread of virus' and worms.

The sad part is, longhorn has been out in alpha for quite a while, as I had a early copy back in 2001. By now, someone has revese engineered the code and is looking for holes as we speak. Pfft. I use MS for gaming, and my nix box for work.

This pack is only a skin pack. Does what it says and for the better part does it well.

I've used Pack 8 since it's release, so far the only "bugs" I've found are the sidebar window does not allow for transparent text on desktop (that's because it's a web element btw) and the user may not have access to old restore points after installation. The work around for this is to run System Restore from Safemode command prompt. (The problem there is windows does not like restoring over newer files that are unsigned)

That said it's very stable and those who understand the way skins work on the OS knows that these tweaks are only "skin deep" get it geek humor.
