As far as music goes, when i used to download a lot of music, it was always live stuff recorded at concerts. Not the best quality but i'm a big fan of concerts and live shows that its worth it. Some of the jam bands like Phish and MOE. embrace it and thus are heralded as great bands because they understand the fans are the ones that are important, not the record label.

Bands like Rage Against The Machine used their affiliation with their label to spread their message of tollerance and understanding and also preaching about social injustices and ways to combat it. A true quality band with the right ideals before they split to form audioslave and whatever zack is doing.

Manufactered artists such as the Ashlee Simpsons deserve to be pirated because they have no talent, are supported by record labels that wouldnt know real music even if they went to a Prince show, and are only concerned about the money a name can bring in instead of the quality of the music.

The internet is a blessing and a curse for both Movies and Music companies. Music seems to have adapted and embraced it Movies on the other hand have been sucked into that "NAPSTER VACCUM" that was created years ago when the artists themselves took on file sharing companies.

I think at one point or another everyone here has made some good points for both sides. No need to go flaming about it. Keep it a friendly debate Gents.

I download underground/abstract music you couldn't find in stores (Good luck finding Ravi Shankar's Electronic Indian mix at best buy . I don't just download music, either. I buy it. I've bought so many cd's that it's hard to count (just recently bought Crystal Method, Commadores, Kool and the Gang, Brick, etc...). I think a good balance between buying and downloading is best, BECAUSE:

A.) If you buy too many cd's (most are at 10-20 bucks a pop), you'll probably not have enough money for food/gas (if you're a college smacker like me).

B.) If you download 1000's of songs a night AND/OR sell them on the blackmarket, you deserve to be put in jail.


Those are my personal opinions, take it or leave it.

As for the new formats thing, nobody forced you to buy the new format. VHS players, record players and tape decks are all still readily available to play your olf formats. If you didn't think it was better you didn't have to upgrade.

As for a conspiracy to come up with new formats to make old ones obsolete you are absolutely right. They are always looking for new ways to sell old shit, on the plus side as many of their attempts fail as succeed (mini discs and video cds to name but a few )

Off topic I have to say it was nice to see a thread that reminded me why the political threads got shut down all that time ago. Some people can't help themselves; they just gotta flame...

Boy I can't wait for HDVD to make my collection yet again obsolete. I am tired of paying for the same material over and over again in a different format. I have some family in the movie industry they couldn't agree with me more.

Then you have no idea what you are talking about. Do you think it is free for the company to remaster and album? Look at the SACD version of DSOTM, completely redone by the original sound engineer. Remixed into 5.1 SACD, or redone into 24 bit(redbook CD is 16 bit) 2 channel. It is so expensive to do a hybred SACD, that Blue Note will no longer be releasing any more SACDs. Blue Note happens to do some very big bands/artists, like Van Morrison and Norah Jones, yet they can not afford to convert to the new medium. This again is something you are certain does not cost anything to produce, it is simply another copy.

The problem is that you have no idea about the industry. You think it is the same exact version, just recorded on a different medium. You are wrong, and if you took the time to investigate it you would know.

This is your little reply to me saying that the record/movie industry is not hedging the way for the new mediums. There are numerous companies competing for the next generation medium. The record/movie industy will look at the different mediums and of course choose the ones that are the most viable(last generation, DVD and DIVx competed in the open market, DVD won). Compact Discs are by far the most viable, and we will be locked into them(for movies) for much longer than music.

If you took the time to investigate instead of thinking up conspiracy theories, you would know this. This is capitalism. A new generation of technology comes out, industries look into which is the most viable and go with it. Many times there are numerous new versions of the same technology(DVD and Divx, HDDVD and Bluray), different companies(including record and movie) will back different formats and then they go to war in the open market.

This is capitalism at it's best.

Actually, Yahoo just got around to adding that. It is about 3 days old. It also backs me up, as they are talkign about the advancements of technology, and where we are going in the furutre with them.

This is part of that whole 'set top box' everyone is gunning for. A media center in your home that does everything, watchign TV, surfing the web, a place to purchase media. First will be music converting to this method, then movies. Music first because of extremely smaller file size.

We just have to wait for technology to advance itself.

Actually it isn't legal to copy music off the radio either.

We were talking about movies though so I will ty and keep my comments on that topic.

If you downlaod a movie you can face fines in the millions and 12 months in jail.

Shoplift said movie from somewhere and the max fine is $100,000 and 6 months in jail. First offense being much less actually.

That said it is still illegal no matter what the justification. I have a friend that is a big pirate and he thinks he can get away with it if he is ever busted, I laugh. The legal fees to defend yourself alone will crush most people.

The real problem in my eyes is that even if the act of stealing copywritten material does not affect sales in any way they will raise their unit prices somewhat to make up for the lost sales. So those of us who download only from a garageband.com are paying more so those that do steal can do so.

I have slipped into talking about music there because there is not independant film movement out there that could release movies on a garagemovie.com. So really there is no legal way to watch a film you DL.

I had a good friend once that also thought most of what he spoke was fact, and that I was wrong if I could not adhere to his way of thought.

It's all perspective and opinion. You haven't come to this understanding yet in life? I can form my own opinion and it will differ from yours.
