iPod, PalmPilot question

Tue Mar 01, 2005 7:58 pm

I have a stupid question regarding the 60 gig iPod. A guy I work with has a PalmPilot and was wondering if he could somehow connect the iPod to the PalmPilot, as a hard drive storage, if he could run an operating system (OS), such as XP, from his PalmPilot.
I figured some of you more technically inclined folks here could better answer this.
Much appreciated !!

Nope. The iPod isn't meant to do such a thing. Running an OS off it would cause it to overheat.

Not entirely true. I have mine configured to store files, as well as work through iTunes, that's easy & documented by the iPod Help manuals.

I've even read that there is a version of Unix written specifically for the iPod. (Google it) With that being said, it still doesn't mean your friend can do what it sounds like he wants from the thing. I'll look around on some other boards though, it's an interesting idea.

You have to make sure that his palm pilot has a usb port or fire wire port. Then it maybe will work.

Can you store any file on the iPod, or just mp3s?

Any files, when you connect it to a pc, it shows up as a USB harddrive.

Sounds entirely possible, if your friend is an uber-geek with tons of time on his hands. Out of the box, no. I haven't seen anything that allows the iPod to connect directly to a palmpilot--even that would be a trick, just for transferring files.

You could possibly transfer files by using the belkin card reader with the ipod and an SD card between the two.

Also ipod only works with itunes on it...so that palm pilot would have to have itunes on it, somehow...

There is a Linux OS for the iPod, I'd give it a try. It works for the 1G, 2G and 3G. Very easy to install(if using Mac) and pretty neat. http://www.ipodlinux.org
