If it was consensual sex and both are over 16, the penalty's should not dictate jail time, unless there were some mitigating circumstances. I would say loss of the job and the oppportunity to work at any other school at a minimum. Just a thought.

I think the girl did say in court that the sex was consensual, but lied about her age. Colorado law treats sex with a minor with large age gaps as "Sex Assault". Since there was a school involved, my guess is the parents (of many students) put heat on the school to pursue this end. The girl only testified because she was subpoenaed. 11 years to life is way harsh, pretty soon we'll be chopping testicles.

If it was consensual, than there shouldn't be a penatly. There is no need to meddle into this guys private life...
