LAN transmission speeds???

any ideas as to why the speeds on my local LAN...wired network thru a linksys WRT54G router...when sending files thru filezilla FTP the speeds start at @ 1MB/sec but peter out and end up at @ 30-50K/sec over the course of a 15MB file. total time for the file @ 2 mins.

Yadad, is the slow speed on the lan side of the router or
when you are uploading a file through the router to some
where on the net? If you are seeing the slow speeds to
the internet, what is your upload cap? Its normal to see
hi-speed for a second or 2 then the cap will kick in.
I am wired here at home and don't have a wireless router
therefor I may not be much help.

1. Is the router new? If so, it looks like it only supports auto-negotiation of the NIC. If your workstation NIC is hard-coded, you could be running into a duplex mismatch, which can severely affect data transmission.
2. Do you run PPPoE to your ISP or are you directly connected to the cable/dsl modem? If you're running PPPoE, you may need to set the MTU down because of the additional overhead. If not, you're probably OK with auto.
3. Try running the following command from a command prompt: netstat -p tcp -s 5
Every 5 seconds, statistics will come up that will show number of datagrams, errors, retransmissions, etc.
4. How's the gaming experience? Are you experiencing any issues there?
5. Have you added anything else new? Firewall (HW or SW)? IDS/IPS (SW)?
6. Have you set up wireless security on your router? Someone else could be enjoying your bandwidth...
