The oddest thing I've ever seen...

Mon May 30, 2005 10:25 am

Yesterday I was at the park in town and I was walking around the lake. I saw a couple of boys throwing tennis balls at a group of ducks so I asked them what they thought they were doing . They pointed out that about four or five drakes were attacking one female duck, pecking at her violentsly and biting her neck while she was just trying to get away from them. Then I saw five unattended ducklings nearby watching this. I kicked at the drakes, hpoing they're fly away in fright but they dragged her into the water and continued to choke her by biting her neck and get on top of her to submerge her. And eventually it worked. She drowned and all that was left of her on the surface was a cloud of blood. I even jumped in to save her but it was too late so I just collected her frightened ducklings and left.

I'm keeping the ducklings for the next few days while I research different reservations. They seem so confused. I'm feeding them and letting them swim in my bathtub while I watch them.

Ducks do that all the time. Gang rape is just part of thei lives...

They didn't rape her, they just killed her.

And I've been going through my dad's old textbooks and ducks are supposedly peaceful.

I prefer my ducks cooked in a garlic and red wine sauce. Yummy!

wow, I have never heard anything like that before. You should call a zoo or something to see what they say.

I'm going to the New York Public Library tomorrow to see if I find anything that could possibly explain this. Ducks are known for being peaceful creatures.

If I find nothing there, I'm e-mailing the animal behavior professor at NYU. (going to undergrad at NYU in the fall)

Google was no help.

all animals, no matter how "peacefull" get hot and bothered just like say lions do. do you know what daddy lions do to rival male cubs? it isnt pretty,.

its nice that your adopting these babies, id contact a vet in the area, to see about placing them with someone that could give them better odds of survival.

i live in New Jersey also, you could bring those ducks over my house if you want, i bet they are tasty ;)

Mon May 30, 2005 10:10 pm

I'm bringing the ducklings over to a nearby reservation on Thursday. They'll be fine because there are experts there that teach orphaned animals survival skills.

mmmm i want to see them survive my raspberry-maple reduction.

Well they probably killed her by accident...

That is classic mating behavior for ducks. Minus the killing of the female duck. Perhaps all the extra commotion from the surroundings caused it to get out of hand. Perhaps it's just a new violent duck street gang that we all need to be wary of.

Seriously, your reading's will show you the first two sentences of this reply are true. Ducks are very aggressive during mating and if there were a bunch of male ducks on one female things could possibly get ugly like that.
