Video Card Advice

Postby MMmmGood » Tue Jun 28, 2005 4:15 pm

Hi Guys-

I am gonna upgrade my current video card and want to stay with Ati. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro now.

I was thinking along the lines of http://www.newegg.com/OldVersion/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-492&depa=0

I'd LIKE to get a card with Dual DVI but Ati doesnt make one that I could find.

The mail in rebate brings it under $350 after shipping, which is not bad at all.

Thoughts?

Do you need an All In Wonder? You can shave off money that way.

I still prefer newegg, I don't care is ZZF is cheaper. Newegg gives great service and will take product pack up to 1 year after purchase.

The e-commerce age sure has killed off loyality to businesses, that's for sure.

MMmmGood, is the 9800 Pro unsuited for BF2?

I am using a 9800 pro and have my graphics turned to Medium with resolution of 1024x768. I haven't tried going any higher than that cause I experience some jumpiness as it is. I am unsure if the jumpiness is caused by the server, lag, my computer in general or the video card.

I am running a 2.8ghz P4 with 1 gig of ram on a single hd.

Info, there is a problem with ranked servers which causes the lag, or 'jumpiness.'

Ah - I have heard a few people mention some ranked server issue but I hadn't directly attributed it to my issues. I'll have to try unranked to test out how far I can push my settings.

Thanks

No as I have a seperate TV Tuner card, but the AIW is cheaper than the standard X800XT, theres no reason to not get the extra features.

Lately Newegg has been slow, doesn't ship same day anymore, and gets orders wrong more ( ECGN orders a TON of stuff from them ). They also don't carry as much stock as ZZF and are out of stock on some items or dont carry others.

We also have tried ZZF and they ship sameday, always get the order right, and the prices are sometimes lower than Newegg. I used to *only* buy from Newegg but i'll check ZZF sometimes now too.

Right now I can run at 1600x1200 with everything on medium and get a little jerkiness, but I am a performance junkie and want smooth play.

I would suggest the card I got......the X800XL. It is cheaper than the XT, but you still get about the same performance. I run BF2 on almost the highest settings with no problem. Im sure it could be on the highest. My 2 c

My 9700Pro runs BF2 at 1024*768 at everything high. no AA/AF though.

MMmmgood what are the rest of your specs? I upgraded to the X850 XT from a 9800pro and while there was an improvement in performance, the CPU played a huge part in slowing my system down. I had to upgrade to an athlon 3500 and now BF2 flies with even 6XAA on high settings and resolution.

I just had a very good experience with NewEgg. Ordered stuff on Tuesday afternoon, they got it on the truck within two hours, everything arrived at my door in NH on Thursday morning.
