Then I had a thought about China. This in turn lead to another thought about super powers and how China may very well become the next.

Then I googled.

"China doesn't want to accept US leadership. Confrontation is inevitable."

It is unusual for a country that achieves economic primacy not to have military ambitions, said Gary Milhollin of the Wisconsin Arms Project.

"At present China can't compete militarily with the US. But it's important to remember that American military might is built on the superiority of the US economy. The day when China has more money than anyone, it'll have a better defence than anyone".
Japan remains close to the United States, but it too is looking to China and its markets to save it from stagnation.

South East Asian countries, where ethnic Chinese have become increasingly powerful, no longer see Japan as an option for the region's leader.

China, Japan, and the United States are the three most productive economies on Earth, but China is the fastest growing (at an average rate of 9.5% per annum for over two decades), whereas both the U.S. and Japan are saddled with huge and mounting debts and, in the case of Japan, stagnant growth rates. China is today the world's sixth largest economy (the U.S. and Japan being first and second) and our third largest trading partner after Canada and Mexico. According to CIA statisticians in their Factbook 2003, China is actually already the second-largest economy on Earth measured on a purchasing power parity basis
Since the end of the Cold War in 1991, the United States has repeatedly pressured Japan to revise article nine of its Constitution (renouncing the use of force except as a matter of self-defense) and become what American officials call a "normal nation." For example, on August 13, 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell stated baldly in Tokyo that if Japan ever hoped to become a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council it would first have to get rid of its pacifist Constitution.

Western investors are urged not to "miss the boat to China". It is forecast that China's economy will become the largest in the world by 2040; it already accounts for 12 per cent of the world's energy consumption.

and finally, this forum post, on a chinese bulletin board. The funky English reminds me of old SNES games. :D

It sucks for the WEst to lose power but it's the truth. It's true that China is the new superpower of the 21st century.

So you, as westerners, have two choices:

1. Respect us as a superpower and try to co-exist us ( it's what we want too. ) you must not insist your will upon us as you used to for past 100 years because East Asia was weaker than the West.

2. Or you keep provoking us and we will make you suffer with out power. This might bring even war so people should not hope for this.

I'm in agreement with you Lord Shard. China is a fast growing Super Power. Which, I might add, we (the USA) are only making more powerful by the day.

Try to find something NOT made in China. I'll bet 95% of the items we buy are made there.

I am not currently overly concerned about China, but there will come a day, in the not to distant future, that China will be more powerful than any other country. They have the man power and soon they will have the economy.

We will not support Taiwan in a war with China. Oh we might send some weapons or such... but that's about it. Dont you know, we (the USA) only attack weak countries. (i.e. Iraq and Afganistan). Iran and N. Korea both have nukes, and according to President Bush are part of the "Axis of Evil", but do we attack them.. NO.

Blah, Blah, Blah... Don't get me started.

Yeah China is becoming a superpower very quickly mainly cause they were smart. Their communist government came to the realization that they were going to remain desolate if they didn't utilize some concepts of capitalization. therefore they started a massive globalization effort, building manufacturing plants to employ their massive population and upped their education efforts to try and pump out some smarter citizens. In turn fully modernized nations such as the US outsourced their small low-tech manufacturing needs to china taking advantage of the extremely low costs of production. With china's education getting better over the past 10 years or so we've seen them move from low-tech into mid and hi-tech areas forming companies able to produce big-money products for capitalistic nations and making hella' profit even with such low production costs. This is the reason computers, computer parts and other hi-tech gadgets have gotten increasingly less expensive in the US fueling an era where it's hard to find a family here without some sign of the new technological age. Whether it's good or bad in the long run doesn't matter to the corporations raking in millions, all they see is massive profit today. Hell if i were CEO of some major corporate entity I wouldn't give a rats ass either cause i'd be swimming in a pool of cash everynight :P

oh yeah and you guys don't know wtf you're talking about, cinnamen poptarts are the shit:cool:
