Tried the MX1000 for a bit, then got the MX518 and what a difference. The 518 just felt so much better in my hands. I love the on-the-fly DPI setting controls on the mouse: get in a tank, crank it up, snipe or need finer controls, crank it down. It's also nice that in the software that comes with it, you can configure up to five (I think it's five offhand... at work right now) individual DPI settings. Also nice that there's a shortcut key on the mouse... gives you an extra button on it to use (I use it for flares and smoke).
And I don't mind the cord. Why would I? I'm sitting at the computer desk anyways!

Move as a team, never move alone. Welcome to the Terrordome!
That sounds cool! (dynamic DPI) I wonder if I could do that with the 1000 with some software? I don't want a cord, I love haveing a rechargable basestation and cordless combo. The precision on the 1000 seems better than my older optical logictech mx 600? (cordless with basestation) I adjust the sensitivity for vehicles differently but I could see how for sniping that DPI adjust could be really nice. BTW I still skip one pixel at a time with the sniper scope zoomed in. How can I snipe at long range and not skip over the traget ( very small from my viewpoint)

I have both the Cordless Trackman Marble and the MX 518 currently hooked up. I think both are great.
I'm leaning toward the MX 518 currently. The ability to control the DPI on the fly is a great option. The 518 is very comfortable. Be aware that is it for Right Handers only!
Overall a vast improvement over my old MS optical mouse.
