WWII ETO books

Postby King » Sun Sep 18, 2005 8:20 pm

Any recommendations on WWII books regarding the ETO? I'm looking for books not written by American authors but books regarding the perspective of British, French, Canadian, German and Dutch soldiers/civilians. Obviously any book not written in English is no good to me.

Any help at all would be great.... and appreciated.

YES YES YES!!! I love books on WWII. The greatest books and just what you are looking for are in the "World War II Library" Published by Dell books. These are incredible great reads! Some are written about german soldiers and you really get the feeling of what they were going through. One is called "Panzer General" that is just great! They are all in paper back and are carried in most book stores.

Different authors. Here are a few examples: "Panzer Commander The Memoirs of Col Hans Von Luck" by Hans Von Luck, "Soldat - Reflections of a German Soldier" by Siegfried Knappe, "Steel Inferno - 1st SS Panzer Corps in Normady", by Michael Reynolds. And probably about ten other books all real good. The only one I didnt like is "A Blood Dimmed Tide" its about the battle of the Bulge. Just to damn big of a battle to write a good book about.

I have:
Tigers in the Mud: The Combat Career of German Panzer Commander Otto Carius

The Hunters and the Hunted: German U-Boats, 1939-1945

Iron Coffins: A Personal Account of the German U-Boat Battles of World War II

Last Citadel : A Novel of the Battle of Kursk

War of the Rats

Also, you want to read anything by Paul Carell. I have an old French edition of "Sie kommen!" , a fascinating account of the invasion of Normandy as seen from the Germans' side. There's an English translation.

I have 2 books written during the war, one by a French-Canadian and one by a French. Too bad they haven't been translated in English. They would be a revelation for the idiots who think the French surrendered without a fight.

Yeap...the French put up a valiant fight against U.S. and British soldiers in North Africa. Killing many allied soldiers.

Donald Burrgett's books are also amazing. His works include "Currahee", "The Road to Arnhem", "Seven Roads to Hell", and "Beyond the Rhine". Read them all and amazing. And Hat I agree with "A Blood Dimmed Tide" being big and long. But nonetheless a good book.

I just ordered "Rendezvous with Destiny" the other day, i'm really looking forward to it. After i read that im going to separate myself from the 101st airborne and the like after reading Band of Brothers, Citizen Soldiers and D-Day By Ambrose.

60 bucks for a book is a lot of money, especially one thats not for any college class. I hope to gain a lot of info from Rendezvous. When i finish it, i'll fire a book report your way.

Thanks for the info.

I was a big fan of 'Pegasus Bridge' by steven ambrose. Follows the training of a British special glider assault unit. Nicely written.
