Did they release any information about the pilot? Was he a military pilot at some point?

BTW, are these guys the same ones to have a plane crash because of a fire caused by improperly stored oxygen canisters? Or am I thinking of another airline?

Let's all ask the obvious question here...

Why would they make an emergency landing when htey had to circle about the airport to lose fuel? Why not just fly to the destination and land it there...not like the landing gear was gonna work any better in LAX.

good point!! and they had to circle for 3 hours too.. The passengers must have been bored to death.

Some Airbus model, Im not sure. The news people weren't very forth coming with technical information.

Value Jet was the airline with the oxygen canisters.

I don't know if they could get the gear up or not. I think they chose LAX because of the big runway.

They burned fuel to make the plane lighter. A lighter plane doesn't need as much speed to stay aloft. Also by burning the fuel, you reduce problems on the ground if the plane landed differently. ie...The landing gear folded. They landed at LAX because it's a 12,000 ft. runway. That gave the pilot a lot more breathing room to ease the nose down when he touched.

Ender's comment is true...very true.. Catalina would be a barren waste land right now if Fury was the pilot, since that where Jetblue 292 was directed to figure 8, while burning off fuel.

As far as the landing at LAX, it was the nearest longest runway immediately available. LAX being a 4 runway airport can adjust operations seamlessly to factor emergency use of the southern complex runways.

There was talk on AM130.800Mhz between LAX, Jetblue 292 and Edwards AFB. For those who watched it as it happened.. He was actually close to running out of runway. Edwards being only about 100 miles from the LA area offers two ideal runways for emergency situations.

Runways 04 / 22 : 15,000 ft paved with an extra 9,000 ft runoff onto the dry lake bed.

Runways 17 / 35 : 39,600 ft dry lake bed.

Where as the longest runway at LAX is 7L/24R at 12,090 ft paved. The pilot was able to put the A320 down on 25L/7R which is 11,095 ft.

Edwards has it's drawbacks.. its more remote and while it does staff the needed emergency personel for such incidents, LAX is obviously in the center of a huge city with alot more resources available at a moments notice.

Needless to say, my opinion of Jetblue has gone up a few points. They obviously have a few great pilots/flight crews in their ranks.

These idiots went about it all wrong. All they needed to insure safety was a few readily available items:
3000 foot long tarp
100 gallons dish soap
10,000 gallons of water.
