Time to upgrade!

Okay...So Christmas is over (finally), and now it's time to upgrade the ol' PC. Had to take care of the wife/kids first;)

So how bout some suggestions?

Processor?

Motherboard?

Video Card?

I have 2 gb of Corsair RAM, so I'm good there.

I'm not necessarily looking for the best deal (I get everything from Newegg) I just don't want to have to do this in another year. Any, and all help is much appreciated!!

Post your current specs.

I would personally go with an AMD chip maybe an 3500 or higher. 939 socket of course. ( have an Intel P4 3.0 right now) Motherboard just whatever does the best for you. Don't know really. Video card whichever brand you like (ATI or Nividia) I like ATI personally. But whatever best fits your needs/wants.

I currently have a P4 3.0, ASUS MB, a 6800 GT Video card, and 2 gb Corsair RAM.

I want to go to a AMD processor, PCI Video Card, and a motherboard that supports SLI. As I said, "I don't want to have to do this in another year.

I'm just looking for suggestions on the processor, and motherboard combo, for the most part.

Wait till jan 4-6/8, CES 06, Ps3 info, Ati Vs Nvidia, all that.

Despite what you think, you WILL need to upgrade in another year, the games next year will be ever more demanding grapics/ cpu wise.

Choose your's.

With those specs, you could upgrade just the video card from a 68gsXxX to a 78gt co, EvgA all the way, would go with the 3500+ VERY nicely.

Again, with the specs you have, a new video card would not hurt, along with waiting till spring/ summer, x2/ dual core will be in full swing, we will have some sollid info on the new fx series, m2/ amd dual core/ ddr2 "http://tinyurl.com/aamcd ddr2 with amd/x2 "i think"

Is it a good idea to go 64 bits? With all the compatibility issues I hear about (such as Starforce copy protection problems), I wonder.

I'm also looking toward an upgrade. BF2 runs like shit on my P2 2GHz + 9800 pro.

Upgrading computer hardware before you need to is definitely a no-no. 64 bit processors aren't needed yet.

I run BF2 fine with 2.4GHZ and a 6600GT with 1GB of ram.

Thanks for the help guys. I will probably go with the Monarch system.

As far as keeping what I have though?...Not an option. I want to switch to AMD, and have the option of PCI video. I also want to be able to run SLI eventually.

I would suggest going and getting the jan 06 issue
of maximum pc. Alot of great articles this month about upgrades and so forth.

If you are going to go with AMD cpu you want to get a
mobo with the nforce sli x16 chipset.

PCI has been out a long time and dosent support SLI

I would go with PCI express if you are getting a new video card.

Im stuck with a 256 MB AGP geforce 6800gt and I dont feel like getting a new mobo just to get a new video card, will probably wait a few months and do everything.

Current specs:

AMD64 3500+
2x1GB Corsair DDR400
BFG 256mb AGP 6800gt

I really dont need to upgrade but feel like it anyways.

I've got an AMD FX-55 with dual boot Fedora Core 4 and XP Pro (32 bit). No problems in either OS. It's the XP-64 that has problems. Generally from what I hear it is the sound that gets messed up most often. I stuck with the regular XP and I don't have any problems.

It will be a long time before Intel gets anymore money from me for a processor. Intel chips use more power and higher clock speeds to achieve lower performance. hexus.net
