The potential for abuse is so vast here it's staggering. Going from novelty to common to required - along with the change from convenience to not having access to this or that or being tracked. Ugh. It's a paranoid person's worst fears and mine too.

Yup, like I say, it's the stuff nightmares are made of, and made more possible by the convenience.
One thing in it's favor is that it's only trackable from 3 inches away. If they find a way to track it from farther away, things get scarier, even at 5-10 feet.

It wasn't exactly cheap but overall I feel it's worth doing. If they get lost, the pound is supposed to have the technology to identify them. If they get stolen it's solid proof who they belong to should they be sold.
And if they get eaten will it cause gum disease?

Scary thought, isn't it? I was thinking that but I didn't want to say it. But.. what if it IS true? That's the thing about religion - you never do KNOW. You can only believe or not believe.

It's been talked about a lot. The same thing was said way back when they started issuing Social Security cards, or when credit cards became a typical part of American life. There has been talk of a cashless society, which flips people out too.
If I ever do decide to get an implant, I'm going to have it put in my penis. Should be a good icebreaker at parties and on first dates. Can ya picture it? Waiter brings over the check with the electronic scanner, I stuff it down my pants, wriggle a little, and pronounce it 'paid'.

I realize this isn't the first time but... Those other forms were not part of you. They were cards and numbers but not physically printed or attached to your person. I must stress that I'm talking about this for conversation sake, not because I necessarilly believe or disbelieve it.

Oh, I think I know what you're saying. It's freaky to tie all the information right to yourself biologically. The biggest fear (to me) is that there is a way to track them from a bigger distance, let's say 20 feet or so. A world where a person is 'tracked' every minute of his or her life is a nightmare. The issue will really get heated if something like this becomes mandated, injected at birth.
I didn't mean to make light of anyone's fear regarding it. I think we are gradually sinking into a life that is less and less private, it's almost inevitable.

while we're at it why don't we all get bar codes tattooed onto us, you just scan the person and it automaticaly accesses there account....
i can't imagine being so tied down, all this technology as it gets more soffisticated takes away our freedom, when you use a credit card, your barrowing money from that company or bank. now you are in dept and as you get further and further in dept, as many people seem to be doing, your losing more and more of your freedom. these chips, maby not at first but soon after they are more wide spred, will be little GPS trackers too, how convienent, now the government will be able to see what store you just accessed your VISA from or where you where at this time. i think cellphones are bad enough, being able to be contacted at any time. I'll never own a cellphone and i'll never get one of these implants.

The thing that most creeps me out is that it's fairly easy to obtain RFID scanners, rewriters, and scramblers. If someone wants to screw with you enough, and you have one of those RFID chips installed somewhere on you, there are easy ways to either screw it up so that it's useless to you or they can steal information off of it.
It's easier for them to do that than to steal the house key in your pocket.
Yeah, I saw that the article mentioned some sort of fabric to block these sorts of attacks, but the moment someone tries to prevent these sorts of cyber/info attacks, someone else will find a way around it.
I DO think the RFID trace implants for pets are a good idea, though.

Move as a team, never move alone. Welcome to the Terrordome!
As far as finding away around a fabric barrier... if it prevents the transmission of radio waves, you're covered. There's no way to hack around physics. Instead, the hacker would have to look for an opportunity when you have your guard down, say for example, putting it under a toilet seat in the office restroom.
These things are great for convenience sake. They only restrict freedom when you are unable to function in society without them. For example, credit card comanies track a massive amount of information about you that could be used by the government for good or ill. But you can still pay cash "under the table," at least in small sums. Of course, the government also tracks bank transactions of large values (thanks to the War on Drugs), so you're limited in that regard to.
An alternative, I suppose, if RFID chips became the norm and you didn't want to have it implanted would be to carry it externally. You'd risk it being stolen, but you could also not take it with you when you wish to remain anonymous. I suppose the problem would be then, there may be many places which won't admit you without your tag...
Actually, this may be the bigget risk. Once tracking people becomes so easy, people won't think much of companies requiring it for admission to movies, restaurants, etc... you know, keeps us safe, and all. Since its no inconvenience. Then it could reach a point where you don't have a choice.... if you want to get from A to B, and have breakfast in between, you must be tracked... and then the nefarious things can happen.
