Windows 2K help

Postby Ldsmith104 » Tue Jan 31, 2006 1:49 am

I am setting up a computer with about 40 users for the fire department. I have added all the user names and passwords. Is there any way to make all the settings for IE for all the users without having to log in to everyones account.

The first time you log on and select IE it asks you all the setup questions like LAN, Proxy server ect.

Do the following before anyone else logs in to the machine'\;

Create an account.
Log in to that account.
Customize everything to your liking.
Log off.
Log on as the Administrator.
Make sure hidden folders are showing.
Right-click "My Computer".
Choose "Properties".
Click "Advanced".
Click "Users" (or "Profiles", I forget exactly. It's been a while since I've used W2K. There may even be a "User Profiles" tab".).

From here you can copy one profile to any other, but what you're going to do is copy your Customized account to your "Default User" account.

The concept is simple, just choose the account you want to copy (you should see a list of active accounts, and by "active" I mean accounts that have been logged in to the machine).

Highlight the profile you modified, then click the "Copy" button.

From there browse to the following directory;
"C:\Documents and Settings\Default User" (keep in mind you can only see that directory if you can view hidden folders\files).

You'll be warned that a profile already exists. Click "OK".

After a few seconds your customized profile will be copied to the "Default USer" profile, so that anytime someone logs in to that machine for the first time, their profile is modeled after the "Default User" profile.

This is the Microsoft method which, surprise, surprise, doesn't work 100% but it works well enough. There may be 3rd party apps that do this better, but I'd stick with the simpler method.

To test it, log off as Administrator and log in as one of the other accounts you've created but haven't used yet.
