For M$, now is the time to strike against Sony in the Japanese market. Under normal conditions, Xbox just can't compete with Sony in Japan. But I think where Sony has stumbled and PS3 won't be around, M$ is trying to shovel everything they can into Japan and attempt to establish a foothold. Look at this way, right now, they have no competition, but the clock is ticking.

Considering the source, 'Xbox Today' , I don't take it too seriously.

The article is accurate, they're just talking about the cost, not the sale price. The PS3 will probably be $500 or so. It's quite common these days for console makers to lose money on the consoles for the first year or two. After a while, the costs drop dramatically and they turn a profit, plus they make money of the licensing rights to game developers.
Even at $500, given the timing, I really think Sony has finally blew it.

You should all be getting XBox's anyway if you don't already have one. The xbox and 360 just kick ass.

Don't worry, it will be worth the wait... or it least it better be!
