T1 connection question

Wed Apr 12, 2006 11:35 pm

Ok guys, i've got a business. The local cable provider is being a jackhole and there is no DSL run to my building. My only real option besides dial-up (which i wont do) is getting some company to instal a "partial T1 connection"

They offer somethign like a 386k, 700k and a 1.5 meg continuous connection. Price is a factor but not a HUGE one. Let me say that the speeds i mentioned are not exactly right i think but close enough for you guys to get the point.

My real question is, has anyone used one of the lower tier partial connections and if so, what are their thoughts on it?

Thanks for all your input

King

I'm guessing that very few people have dealt with partial T1s. Is it to host a web page or what?

Do you have any specific questions? I've provisioned them in the distant past. I've never actually used one myself but they're on the same network as a T1 they just have a bit limit put on them - or that's the way we provisioned them at the company I used to work for. Latency for gaming, browsing or whatever should be the same as a T1 unless you have more traffic than it is limted to.

well all the work is online using half.com, amazon and ebay. Its basically web-browsing. Overkill i know but the situation that presents itself allows us to get this in quickly as opposed to 45 days for Charter to get the permits they need.

I have had partial T-1s at our company in the past. We have had 256k and 512k lines. Currently we have a full T-1, which is ample for the 50 employees here with two VPN links for remote users.

How many empoyees would need to be online at the same time?

There will be around 5 guys at most. Currently there are 3.

Thanks for the info guys, i really appreciate it!

t1 should be fine

For 5 people you dont need a full T-1.

512k would suffice, even 256k would be fine for pure browsing. As long as you dont need to download huge files or host them on a FTP server you can get away with less than a T-1.
