Got my new card.. and I am sad

Thu May 25, 2006 9:43 am

so, I get my ati x800gto yesterday.

I uninstall all ati drivers install the card, then get set for higher fps.

Start up Oblivion, play for about 1min then BAM, my pc turns off!

So, I try bf2.. Same thing.

It even happens when I run the direct3d test in dxdiag :(

I have tried everything, even a clean install of windows on another partition.

Same thing, every time. Guess its going back to newegg :(

Just wanted to vent!

It sounds like an inadequate power supply to me. That's my first thought at any rate.

Yup power supply issues. What are you running to your system?

Thu May 25, 2006 9:47 am

I agree with Allah, I had this problem after the first patch came out(don't know why it happened then and not from the beginning).

To rule out power supply, I unplugged my 2 dvd burners, two sticks of ram and some non essential usb stuff. Do you think this card would really bull that much more then a 9800 pro?

I am running a Coolmax 450. I would think that 450w is enough power.

I guess I can always go buy a power supply and return it if its not the issue.

Uh.. My first thought was 450watts should be plenty. My second thought was, 'wait a minute he unplugged 2! DVD burners AND some usb stuff.' !? How much crap do you have drawing power on your PC? I would still not rule out the power supply not being adequate based on what little information you just posted. I would say you kind of support that idea rather than ruling it out.

Ok, I will try a new PSU. BUT... If it does not work, you get banned for a week! ;)

<insert evil laugh>

Mugzy, how many Amps are coming from your 12V rail?

EDIT #1: I checked it out and it has 22A. typically not enough to run a last gen vid card(x700, x800, 6600GT, 6800GT)

Edit #2: 1000th Post smackers

Wait wait wait! Let's not be so hasty and jump to conclusions.. How many things do you have drawing power? Make sure you HAVE a power issue and if so, that you buy an adequate power supply to correct it. After all, I think I would die if the plug were to be pulled on my addiction... :P

450p/s is enough, but the supply itself could be bad/going bad

Thu May 25, 2006 11:42 am

Get a DMM and test the 5v and 12v lines to to see if it is the PSU or not..

Thu May 25, 2006 11:57 am

:buli: it has ZERO to do with the overall Wattage of the PSU.

Thu May 25, 2006 11:59 am

In his case 450 is enough total power, the question is whether or not the psu is correctly providing power to his devices. Especiually the vid card.. WHich actually you need to test the 3v line for.

Thu May 25, 2006 12:45 pm

Bromsin, typically Video Cards use very little Amps from the 3V line, meaning 0.1Amps.
