The site is back on:
UPDATE MAY 25, 2006:
According to informed sources, contacts in the American intelligence services confirm the existence of a time window of 48 hours, centered on May 25th at midnight GMT, for the impact a comet fragment south of the Azores.
This information corroborates information of an evacuation exercise of the U.S. Congress to occur later in the day of May 25th, information which reached us this morning.
As a measure of precaution, I suggest the authorities do the utmost to protect the populations of the Atlantic coastlines. -- Eric Julien

LoL a comet fragment? Since it is mostly ice it would just melt when it hit the atmosphere.

Darknut is right, Comets are just ice and gases with very little in the way of solidity. A fragment of a comet would just be ice.
Now if a meteor or asteroid was gonna hit, well that would suck...
Ironic though, this will happen eventually. Its just a matter of time.

Reason comets are so deadly is they only show up when they are close to suns, thusly there gaseous tail. Truth is if a comet really did hit the earth it could be just the same as a meteor or asteroid, only thing is no early warning. This whole story about the fragment is just a crack pot's retarded idea.

If the comet hit us directly then yea it would not be good. However a fragment of a comet wouldnt likely do much if anything.
A fragment of an asteroid or meteor could be devastating though if big enough.

Clearly just a way of perlonging the amount of time people visit their site and theycan keep those who believe it in fear.
Maybe the people who made this up are going to go lotting peoples houses who they know have left.

Er, it depends on the size of the fragment. If it's the size of Manhattan it's not going to melt.

I will try to find a website on it, but i saw a documentary on it tv.
La Cumbra Breata (or something along them lines) on the island of La Palma.
I saw that documentary on Discovery some time back. Long story bout the physical structure of the island/volcano, but apparently during it's last eruption 1/3 to 1/2 of it started sliding down to the ocean, but caught and stayed up. If it does ever release and fall in one shot, the tidal wave will be huge. But who knows, could be that every eruption the weak side will slide a little further, and over a long time it will gently slide into the ocean and not cause much if any problem.
