Maybe I've been living in a hole.. I just found out about this movie yesterday (saw a trailer with Poseiden). It looks pretty cool..

Good question... From movies.com web site:

"Futuristic undercover agent Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) can change his face and identity. But when he ingests too much of the drug Substance D, his personality splits in two."

What happens after that? Who knows? I guess they'll tell you to see the movie..

The animation is called rotoscoping. Normally they would project a single frame onto a transparency, and an artist would trace the frame, each frame by hand. Remember, he's an artist, not a tracer!! (kevin smith fans know the reference there)
The guy making this movie shot it digitally then used some advanced program to help the artists out with the rotoscoping. It does look kinda neat, plus if it's a big hit and they want to really whore it up, they can re-release the live action version.

Ha.. the main reason I saw Posiden was a feeling of obligation and posterity. I remember seeing the original when it came out.. I was just a kid.
It actually wasn't all that bad, even though it got bad reviews. It seriously lacked character development. The wave hit the boat way too soon in the movie. They could have waited and spent more time early on letting you get to know the characters. I did like the special effects when the tragedy occurs though. I will say this.. it was a lot more gory than the original. And probably more true to life. As they marched thier way upwards toward the hull of the ship, they ran in to many, many dead bodies. As you can imagine with those cruise ship carrying many thousands of people.

A Scanner Darkly is by Philip K Dick. He also wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which was the inspiration for the movie Bladerunner and The Minority Report (inspired movie of same name). Most of his work was written back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, but even though dated (definitely influenced by the Cold War) still holds up amazing well.

Currently I'm reading The Divine Invasion with The Zap Gun next in my list.

Another nice thing is that Dick tended to write short stories and novelas. They are definitely easier reads than the usual 700 page monster that I'm reading.

All in all adaptations can be hit and miss (i.e. The Minority Report). I'm hoping even though this has Keanu Reeves in it that it'll be good. Don't get me wrong. I like alot of his movies, but he has the emotional acting range of Al Gore (on second thought Al might beat him). I liked The Matrix movies inspite of him. Oh and of course because Trinity was the first time I ever saw movie hacking that was realistic (nmap + sshnuke. I love you my script kiddy babe!!! ).

Actually, I really liked "The Minority Report".

I have to agree with you about Keanu Reeves acting. He is terrible! One of my least favorites (along side Adam Sandler).

Glad to see there is at least one other reader of fine lit out there. A Scanner Darkly was pretty good, much like his other works. I like that they went for the rotoscoping effect for the movie adaptation.
