Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

I have a video that is 60 seconds long. It's almost 30 MB. Is there any way of converting it to be a smaller file size without making the actual video smaller? I used a small format 320x240 to try to reduce the size initially.

You could encode it into another format: DivX is good or mp4. There are plenty of utilites that'll do that for you
As for just changing the filesize that's possible too, windows movie maker for example lets you chose the filesize you want, it does affect quality quite a lot though. Maybe becasue I am a bit of a noob at it.

It's avi format right now. I'm really noob to this personally. I just want to share this and don't want people to take forever to download it.

Copy and paste what I wrote in italics into notepad. Save the file with the .reg extension. Confirm that you want to add it to your registry. Afterwards add your address bar and standard buttons back using the view menu. This will get rid of that lame Windows flag, officially called the throbber, that sits below your close window button.
Oh yeah, back up your registry first in case you accidently screw up the copy and paste.

And we are supposed to care about that flag why. I can honestly say I nvere even noticed it till you tld me how to remove it. I don't think I'll bother

I've only dabbled in the video editing, so I'm no expert. I believe that the AVI format is uncompressed. You should definitely convert it to MPG or any other compressed format. Yes, quality will suffer, but that's the price of compression. You should be able to adjust the compression/quality of the video. (i.e. More comression = less video quality).
The AVI format is good for editing (at least from my experience), but then you will need to compress it to make the file size reasonable. Like I said, I'm no expert, so your mileage may vary.

huh huh throbber
Wed Jul 05, 2006 4:04 pm
Well I downloaded a trail version of an avi to mpeg converter. I'm not sure if there is an easier way or not, or something free. The software that came with my camera doesn't let me save it as anything but avi. I think that is most of my problem.
Wed Jul 05, 2006 4:20 pm
The throbber is evil, you must remove it.

Divx is best. Actually, I'm very partial to Nero's MP4 encoder.
Dr.Divx (the original one, not 2.0) is one of the easiest to use. They've discontinued it, but I have a copy of the trialware version. You could probably have that video at a pretty decent size, 640x480, and have it come in at about 12 MB or so.

ship, if you want, send me the file and i compress it for you.

I'd stick to converting it to mpeg or wmv. Afterall, which is worse...them downloading an uncompressed 30MB file that they will have no problem playing or them downloading a 15MB one where you have to tell them to also download a codec to be able to play it?

I got it, thanks guys. I appreciate the help.
