New Intel core2 duo line!!
Look at the Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz at $316.
In most tests it's battling (and beating) the Athlon 64 FX-62! Never mind the Athlon X2 line.

I might be buying an Intel proc for the 1st time in many years.

Seems very promising for Intel.

OMG OMG OMG it beats AMD! Big deal.
Wait for AMD's next gen chip and it's quad-core CPU's in 2007.

It beats AMD and is cheaper than AMD's very expensive CPU, That *is* a big deal. Usually AMD offered more power for the money than Intel.
As a MAJOR side note though, I've been reading up on it a bit, and doesn't look like Intel's new CPU will be available in mass quantity for quite a while. Like, Q1 of 2007. If this is the case, then all of this is bullsh*t. What good is a $301 chip that beats AMDs $900 chip if I can't buy it?
Things might not be so bleak for AMD after all. Makes me wonder why they bothered dropping their prices so much (upcoming on July 24th) if Intel can't deliver the CPUs.

Then wait for the Intel ones that will be 8X, then the AMD 8X, then...........
What matters is right now, today. Intel has come up swinging for the fences and drilled a grand slam with this new line.
This is also good for all of us. AMD is slashing prices to next to nothing.
One thing not mentioned, these new Intels are also highly overclockable.

What will actually take advantage of quad core in the next few years????

Battlefield 2142 will require quad core CPU running at 12 Ghz to support 'low' video settings.
'medium' video setting will require users to shoot down an alien craft and take their computer by force.
'high' video settings are only available to God, and I have it good source that even he suffers through constant CTDs.

If only you knew.
One of our sister companies uses some of the fastest hardware around because we need the power and performance - We use Dual Dual core AMD Opteron systems, RAID10, etc. etc..

Don't get wrong, I love AMD. Usually there is a sweet spot where AMD just always gives the best deal, the most power for the money, ie spend $300 on AMD or Intel, and usually you walk away with a faster $300 proc with the AMD offering.
This was the first time in a long, long, long time that I know of where $300 spent on Intel beats $300 spent on AMD, or even $500 spent on AMD.
Of course it's all for naught if Intel can't produce these chips substantially, and I can't buy them anywhere.

Here is a link to a pretty good gaming review of the Core 2 Duo chips vs AMD.....

Skip to the conclusions:

Intel probably still the best choice if you are using an older chip and are ready to upgrade and want to future proof as best you can. But if you already have a high end AMD chip, there is no reason to dispair. In gaming performance there does not appear to be a lot of difference between the two. So, lots of hype to work through out there. Right now the price favors Intel, but AMD's price cuts should be coming out today or tomorrow.

For me it is intel all the way! I have built / bought 5 rigs so far in my gamming life and here is how they stacked up.
First 350 P2 - Still running today, gave it to my mom
Second 750AMD Tbird - Toast CPU Fried
Thrid 950AMD Tbird - Toast CPU Fried
Fourth 1.7AMD Tbird - Toast CPU Fried
Fifth 3.2 P4 - Running today OC'ed to 3.6 and has been for 18months
I am intel for life.

The Tbird's have always been hot. If you have proper cooling then it isn't an issue!
However, AMD's chips now are nowhere near the same level of heat that would fry older AMD chips. Although after I got my 700MHz Athlon, I have not looked back since. I love AMD.

I used to say that about nVidia....swore I'd never buy ATI. Oops, 9700 pro came along. Now I could care less, just want best value. Seems you can buy either and be safe nowadays.
Funny, I've got a 1.4 Tbird still going strong after at least 5 years, oc'd most of that time. Other than a heatsink coming lose causing a meltdown, I've yet to have a cpu fail. No offense, but I find it a bit disingenuous you had three in a row burn up. Geez, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice.....
I'm glad there's so much competition as it keeps prices down for what I need for a gaming machine, don't care to keep up with the Jones'. Wny use a sledge hammer to swat a fly?
It's time to build a new rig, just haven't decided what. It defintely will not be the current Intel crop of cpu/egg friers, but would consider the Core 2 Duo at the right price. However, if Cavaliert is right and they aren't planning on mass producing them anytime soon, it's AMD again. Trouble is, I haven't been keeping up with what's out there the past 6-12 months, so will need to do some research.

Well with what I said I must add that I am damn glad AMD is around. Can you imagine what intel would be charging for CPU's if they were the only game in town? It would be similar to my fist PC. Gateway 350P2 with 8 meg voodoo2 graphics card and 64 megs of ram = $2,700 add about 25% to that number to get an idea and then add another 50% to that due to higher volumes, faster video cards etc. You would be looking at about $5,000 to build a PC.
