? Why?
It really should not change a thing. It is not like ATI was bought out by nvidia or anything.

Actually I see it as a great thing. Something major is going to change in the way video is handled. I think the days of a "video card" will soon be a distant memory.
The answer, I'm not sure. Maybe the Video chip will plug in directly to the mobo just like the processor, may they just move the video card to the other end of the mobo away from the processor to help with heat management.
If it was nvidia and ATI merging that could be bad for the consumer. However combining the resources of AMD and ATI could make a huge difference in the R&D for video processing.

I can see where he might be worried. A CPU company is buying a GPU company. It might be possible to start making your CPU's to function more openly with just ATI as opposed to the competition on Nvidia. It kinda puts Nvidia in a so-so position.
Yes I agree they can concentrate more on how the CPU communicates with GPU to make it better, but they will only be doing all this R&D with AMD chips working with ATI chips...
Thats where it might worry me

What if amd decides the nforce chipsets are unprofitable and shouldnt work as well as the ati versions? Or vendor lock in as jfmaday suggests.
We should be seeing big things in video? We ARE seeing big things in video. My 1.5 year old ati9800 video card isn't even on the performance charts anymore they've improved so much.
ATI vs nvidia = healthy competition; AMD vs intel = healthy competition. Less competition rarely means a win for the consumer.
I don't know, I just don't see the positives some of you do.

AMD would be shooting themselves in the foot for the larger CPU battle with Intel if somehow they started doing these things. Intel is already kicking butt on higher end CPU's, the last thing AMD would want to do is force customers to Intel by restricting Nvidia tech.
Just a thought.

Intel is kicking AMDs butt sort of, in theory. The Core2 duo is an AMD killer.....if they become available. Supposedly only 25% of Intels procs rolling off the line will be Core2, and Dell and Gateway will snap those up. It could be a while before an end user can get their hands on the CPU. I think I read the lower end Core2 won't be available in quantity until Q1 '07.
Sound like it could be a repeat of the Itanium when it first came, aka 'The Unobtainium'

If they have problems producing them in big numbers than this will be the equivalent of vaporware, a product that doesn't effectively exist but kills AMD's sales anyway.
