i know their encoded... MP4?

So if you have music on Windows Media player and you open that file you can import it into your iPod library. mp3->mp4..... works fine.

But i dont think there is any simple way to take mp4->mp3 it's apples way of keeping you on a short leash.

And theres issues with "borrowing" music with your friends. say you take your iPod with 1,000 songs to a buddies and want to load HIS 1,000 on to your iPod.. Doesn't work cause once your fire up iTunes and load your iPod it syncranizes... with that unit. So when a foreign unit arrives it will update the muisc (but it will first erase all of your current songs) and when you go back to your machine and try to re-load your music it will ask you to delete the current songs on the iPod... very frustrating.

oh.. and watch for buying songs on iTunes..... some shit where you can only authorize your account 5 times. Say you back up your music on external HD. format your PC. re-load iTunes and import your music the first time you try to play a song you bought (via iTunes) it wil ask you to verify your account. Now i only think that happnes with songs youve purchased through them, and i dont know what the process of contacting them after your 5 authorizations are used up.

i got mine as a gift, thought it was great. you have to use itunes ... or the gift is worthless so i just agreed to all the little boxes while installing and now i wonder what was in the fine print. I'll be one pissed off hombre if i "loose" the 100 or so songs ive bought with it over the last 1.5 years.

I would have bought one back when they were 20gb and well built. I haven't heard anything good about the shuffle orr the nano though and their memory is too damn small. Someone explain to me the principle of paying the same price 3 years later for a product which has less memory and isn't as well built. Didn't anyone notice the memory was getting smaller on those things?I bought an 8gb sony mp3 walkman instead. It's pretty sweet, my only complaint is that it's connection to the computer is slower than hell...

I have the 30gb iPod. Have had it for a year and a half and it still works great. I have roughly 4700 songs and tons of pics on it. I use it as my all time car music holder and for my home. I dont reach for cd's anymore.
Anyway, King, you can try just using the iTunes software to remove/move songs onto and off the iPod. Or, under the options menu in iTunes (your iPod is plugged into your computer and synched with iTunes, there should be an iPod icon in the lower right hand corner of the iTunes application) Hit that button and it will open up your options. There should be an option to make your iPod act just like an external disc drive.

There are also a bunch of third-party tools that let you do things Apple doesn't want you to be doing but I can't speak for how well these tools work.

As far as Authorizing only 5 machines for your iTunes purchases; I believe you can "De-authorize" older PCs if you near thr 5- PC limit.

No idea how this works, or how easy it is to distinguish one PC from the next.

you have to de-authorize from the same machine it was authorized from in the first place. You also can goto the itunes website and you can deauthorized all of your machines and set the count back to zero once a year.

LoL you think that was accidental...

They call that inbuilt obselescence or they used to anyway god know what new term they have for it now. They've been doing it for years. If they offer 5 years warrantly it's because they know that the percentage of failure before that date will be negligable and after the shit will hit the fan.

Top 2 reasons they don't make the ipod mini and the original ipod anymore:

1) They were too reliable. If they don't break you don't need to buy another one.

2) They had too much memory. If they have all the memory they need they won't need to upgrade.

I'm disappointed in apple becasue they have clearly been cynical little fucks with their ipods in a way they never used to be with their computers. My old iMac still runs like a charm and it's 5 years old. Never had a single problem with it. The build quality on it is superb
