Yeah, thought of the doctor or PA thing for a while now, however I have been disgusted with the whole healthcare industry.
Too much uncertainty for Docs and PA's between all of the Indians coming over getting there MD, willing to do what a doctor does for what a PA makes.
Less specialists needed do to technology upgrades. x-rays, CT, MRI, and test results being read by docs overseas.
Litigation nuff said
Insurance companies dictating what they will pay for procedure, what procedures and tests they will and will not pay for, regardless of whats best for the patient.
That left me with a few options
Nurses have it made (as far as there future in healthcare) National shortage with no end in sight.
Being a paramedic, I couldn't "step down" to a nurse even though they make 2-3 times what I made as a Paramedic.
So even though I am not a nurse, I took a "nursing" position ($6 hr raise) in our education department. I am the education coordinator for ACLS, PALS, and BCLS. Running and teaching those classes, as well as teaching EKG, critical care, and customer service classes.
I still ride the ambulance when I want, they just pay me at my old rate for that time.
I am currently working toward my MBA with a concentration in Healthcare management. The classes are held on the hospital campus by the local university for hospital employees. I decided on this path after looking at the starting salaries of graduates with there PA vs MBA and they are the same. Only difference is a I can use my MBA in any field.
Maybe after that I will pursue my MD or DO and become a medical director for a service someday (close to retirement) and have nothing better to do that keep my EMS service on the cutting edge.
All and all I feel the future in healthcare (the money maker) at least in my lifetime will be long term care and I hope to open several assisted living facilities, and maybe a skilled nursing facility when I graduate with my MBA
Probaly a lot more than any of you wanted to know, sorry to take so much of your time.
Now go catch up on the buli
