Is this the same BF42.com as the one from the early 2000s?
First off, bad thread title, I know. It's around 4:00 AM and I had a hard time coming up with a decent title.
Anyhow, a long time ago I used to go to BF42.com (http://web.archive.org/web/20031002020222/www.bf42.com/forums/), and had a great time. Then, after some unsuccessful website mergers (fpscentral, etc), BF42.com eventually vanished off the face of the internet, much to my dismay.
I had no choice but to move on, and every once in a while I would run into a fellow bf42.com refugee. Then, I found out that a website started by other bf42.com members had been founded (bfcentral.co.uk). That was fun for a while, albeit very slow posting wise. Eventually, this website also died, and that was the last I saw of bf42.com for quite a while, until tonight I suppose.
I came across this site after trying to find out what happened to Shamus and Fizban, since I had nothing better to do. I then came across the archives of bf42.com that this website hosted, and then found my way into this forum. After checking the member list, I noticed that there were quite a few old members, and some I even recognized (Tommy Boy). I noticed I wasn't on the list, but that's understandable since it's been such a long time. I just wish I remembered my old join date.. It was at least prior to 2003, that much I do remember.
So am I correct in assuming that this is essentially the old BF42.com forums, under new management?
If so, it's good to be back.
On a side note, I mostly hung out in "The pub" so some of you that stayed in the bf1942 section might not recognize me.

Lupin,
This is not bf42.com, however some of those forum members did belong to
both forums.
By the way welcome to the forums.
This is a quote from Chacal (our head admin) on 10-11-2005.
"Oh no not him.
BF42.com closed months ago after a disagreement between Summit and partners.
ECGN still owns the domain name, that's why you were sent here.
That's the only link between the two. ECGN is NOT BF42.com. This place is a lot more civilized and the chaos that were once bf42.com forums wouldn't be tolerated here (hint).
There isn't a lot of BF42.com old-timers here. I saw some on Wolfgamers.net, I know VisionOfHate is an admin there."

Thank you for the swift reply, and thanks for the welcome.
It's been such a long time, but now I remember that ECGN and BF42 were separate forums. Guess I jumped the gun a little, eh?

I don't really remember the bf42.com forums being too chaotic though. But then again, I was young at the time, and nostalgia tends to omit the bad parts of things.
Anyhow, I suppose the few old BF42 members that are here can look me up sometime if they want.
Regardless, it's probably about time I moved on, and stopped worrying about that old website.

Thanks again for clearing things up for me.
Edit:
I did a quick search on the forum, to see if anyone else had made the same mistake as me, and I found this thread:
http://www.bf42.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16595&highlight=bf42.com
I remember seeing that very thread linked on bfcentral!

So I guess this isn't the first time I've been here afterall.

Yeah this is long ago, but I remember that the guy who had bf42.com sold it to some kind of entrepreneur named Summit who had grand business ideas and bold plans, with the understanding that the guy would keep control of it. Soon after they had a fall out because of said grand ideas and the guy was flushed by Summit.
Later Summit came to Tom, owner of ECGN, with even grander business ideas and bolder plans and a project was started with the insane notion of making money through a batlefield web site. Tom bought bf42.com. Summit got enough access on the ECGN game servers to create new admins, guys whom we had never heard of, who started changing the rules, kicking out everyone and generally being assholes. This generated much hilarity, we had words, and all those idiots were flushed.
Soon the bold business plans fell through and Summit and his grand ideas were never heard of again. At least that's how I dimly remember the story, of which I was aware of only a small part.
Somewhere in all that, bfcentral.com was created, but I can't remember how it fits.

Yeah I remember all of those mergers. It was pretty annoying because ownership seemed to change nearly every year, which drove quite a few people away (especially the ah.. Amped News merger, I believe).
As far as I remember, Bfcentral.co.uk was basically a website started by old bf42.com members in order to bring the spirit of the old forums back. Summit was on the forum, but he seemed to be just a member and not in a position in power. The only admins that I can remember were DrunkenPirate, and phatmonkey. If memory serves correctly, DrunkenPirate used to be either a moderator or admin on the original site. Don't know about phatmonkey though.

Ah yes Amped News, not BFCentral. Jeez, this is so long ago!

Haha, yeah. I've been on the internet for such a long time though (since 1994), that comparatively, BF42.com's heyday doesn't seem like it was too long ago.

I've been on the internet since 1986.
The place looks a lot different now.
We didn't have fancy-shmancy graphics and had to ftp each way by hand in the snow uphill.

And you got the download on punched cards.

Heh. Yeah, I wish I knew about usenet back then. Of course, I probably couldn't of done much with it since I was born in 89'. I did have a C64 back then though, and despite my young age I was quite good with it.
I still remember how nearly every page was just some junky angelfire page, with no graphic buttons and just text everywhere. Then came the ability to add midis and images onto webpages. Hoo boy, those midis were everywhere. Same with poorly animated 3 frame "under construction" gifs.

There were also very few advertisements for a while, until pop-ups became all the rage. Then things like Bonzi buddy ads started showing up on practically every webpage. Then later on those "Your computer has an error! click here for free spyware!" ads started showing up everywhere, sometime in the early 2000s. I don't know if they're still around (adblock) but they probably are.
