Check that your cd-key is correct.

In your 'Main' folder you should have a file named 'rtcwkey'. Open it with Notepad and verify your cd-key is in there (without the last 2 digits)

thanks for the advise, but I can play on crappy 1.4 bot servers with no issues. Does anyone know if I am actually IP banned by an admin?
