Any of you guys try Empire Earth? It's been out for quite a while as well... Just looking for some comments... I need a new offline game to play that won't bore me to tears and won't cost me $50 to buy.

I've played AoE original up to deluxe gold. Great game. Well researched. Seemless in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, the A.I. even on it's toughest setting bottle-necks troops to hot spots. I HATE that in games. All you have to do is ambush its troop-colums and it's toast.
Empire Earth is a fabulous game that's poorly put together. Good graphics all around. I loved the transitions from preolithic to post-modern warfare. The A.I. in Empire Earth on it's toughest settings is a serious psycho-path with Genius intelligence. I've never beaten it 1-1 without serious tweeks to my advantage. It probe-attacks. Withdraws. Does pincer attacks with more than two prongs. Not unusual to see the A.I. do a air strike, land forces on the beach AND storm the front gates. Very nasty. The post-modern gimmicks were far-fetched and cumbersome, I found. The game has one of the best variable manipulations I've seen in any game. It's spawn-creations of maps is excellant as too are the sizes of the maps--the Huge is REALLY REALLY huge. Great if you love long wars. Expect to sit down for ten hours if you want to remember where everything is. Command and Conquers Generals pales in comparison.

I should have added--get the deluxe version of Empire Earth if you can. They call it something else. I've currently got it loaned out so can't remember what they refer to it as. Anyway, they only came out with the original and then the 'deluxe' or whatever add-on.
Shame the game didn't catch on. I've played a lot of building-bases kinds of games (Total annihlation, Star craft, all the Command and Conquers, Dark realm, that orcs and human game that I can't remember the damned name of, etc). Empire Earth felt like a game that they ran out of money half-way through making it. But what they did manage to put together is, in my opinion, the best game of that genre ever produced.
If you like tough fights, I'd recomend the Close Combat series by MicroSoft. Very well researched with realistic and tough battles emulating scenarios out of ww2. You don't build bases but rather select items that were available during those scenarios. It's an over-head style game like the building-bases kind.
One of my all-time favourites, though the graphics suck and you have to read the 200 page manual or forget it, is X-com Apocolypse. This game will draw you in better than a cheery fire, a bottle of bourdou and a decent Cuban cigar.

I just noticed in a gaming store today that Microsoft has come out with a game which looks exactly like Empire Earth and AoE. It's called Rise of Nations. Appears to stop in the modern era, or slightly earlier, say around the 70's.
Has anyone purchased this?

I agree,
If you like AOE then you will love Empire Earth.
Rise of Nations is also very cool.

Seether, give a run-down on what Rise of Nations is like. Is it much different? Worth shelling out the bucks for?
