Fastping for DSL - any good?
I am thinking about getting DSL at home. Checking the brochures, online-ad's, TV-commercials, sales agents.... I am deeply impressed with the variety of offers. Some providers also offer "fastping" for happy gaming at additional costs. Anybody with some experience on that or at least with an opinion:help:
*EDIT: I just checked the service is also called "fastpath"

Sushi,
I have Bellsouth DSL connection. Originally they only had one level, but I think they have divided it into three separate levels, with different costs and speeds.
I have the fastest connection (1.5 down, 256k up) Bell South offers. Looking at the other DSL providers, it appears to be a GOOD connection speed. Of course I pay almost $50/month.
As I understand it, your DSL speed will vary with your distance from the Central Office (CO) of your local telephone provider. (i.e. the greater the distance from the phone company, the slower your DSL speed).
You may want to check out your local Cable company. Many people find cable to be faster. As you know, the more people in your area that use cable for online activities, the slower your connection will be.
From what I have read, Cable will soon (1 - 2 years) be able to double the current speed without installing new lines. I have yet to hear anything about DSL being doubled.
The way I see it... It comes down to 3 things...
SPEED, AVAILABILITY AND PRICE.
I would check out all my options before I started shelling out $50/month. Cable MAY be a beter option.
Good luck.

I've got Qwest DSL. It's very reliable but my pings are lackluster. I typically ping between 150 and 190 to ECGN.
My friends on cable always get sub-100 pings.

Frames are never an issue. I'm typically above 100 with my Radeon 9700 Pro. I just always feel like the enemy always gets off the first shot and that can be, and typically is, a bad thing.

With a ping like 11-20.. NO WONDER you kick my butt!
With my Bell South DSL , I ping the ECGN games at around 60. Anything less than 100 ping is acceptable to me.
BTW. If anyone does not use All Seeing Eye (ASE), I HIGHLY recommend it.
I have cox cable...with and nomrally get a ping beween 11-20. Though I'm a little closer to the ecgn servers. I blow a wapping $150 a month...with HD TV and a dedicated IP address.

a friend just got a DSL connex and he's getting some crazy d/l speeds
for gaming tho- we're in the same city, I have cable, and my ping to ECGN Beach Server is a little better than his. i usually ping around 30-40 (think the server's in VA tho)
w/ DSL he can d/l 5-6 files at a time with each transfering at about 300-400 kbps (me- i don't see my rate go over 200-230 very often).
there's good advice already here from DSL users, but i'm pretty happy w/ my Comcast cable @ $34/month
