Bill Gates can blow me...

Postby Lord ZOG » Fri Sep 05, 2003 12:01 am

I've had it with Windows.

I've had it with the hundreds upon hundred of errors, the crappy software, the bloated .DLL storms, the lock-ups, the freezes, the ActiveX scripts, the SpyWare, the Security holes, the viruses, the constant re-installing, the frigin CD-Keys from hell, the endless array of pseudo-technical support, the blatant raping of America, the out-right thievery, the laugh-in-your-face, toungue-in-cheek neo-Nazi, marketing we all have jammed down our throats (Hey Bill, START THIS UP!!!), the Blue Screens, the Error Reporting, the Windows Updates that take a half hour to complete and end up screwing up what at one time worked.

Should I go on?

How about a CVD-Rom drive that actually spits out the tray WHEN YOU PRESS THE BUTTON!?!?!?! Is that too difficult?

How about when I right-click that frikin useless animated animal in my Search feature that I don't have to sit and wait for 15 FUCKING SECONDS to watch that God-forsaken thing animate away from me!?!?!?

How about not initially setting up Windows for fucking idiots? How about not hding my files, of hiding my extensions? How about getting rid of those insane pop-up ballons reminding me to "Tour Windows" or Sign in with Messenger every second of my life???

How about disabling the Messenger Service so that every reprobate doesn't send me the most annoying messages???

Microsoft wants people to consider Windows their "Enterprise" software?? Are you shitting me? When was the last time you saw a Heart/Lung machine being run by Windows. Think NASA has Windows ready to go for their next version Space Shuttle? Surely you jest!

I'm tired and I wanna go home...back to something that at least worked!!!

Microsoft ought to be ashamed of themselves. I don't even want to bring up Windows ME. What the fuck was THAT!?!?!

Seriously, back to the effin drawing boards, ladies. You've got a frigin disaster on your hands.

i honestly love XP. well that is once ive set it up how i like it. I disable messenger in services, turn off the stupid xp themes, and I avoid updates unless i absolutley need them.

Honestly, XP only has only locked up on me after i have done stupid things like overclocking too high or installing free software that I know has spyware and adware. that gain shit that comes bundled with divx and p2p locks up my internet explorer.

i will admit that windws activation is a mighty pain in the ass.

To tell you the truth, I've had virtually no problems with Windows XP. I keep my drivers up to date and organized, and I don't have a problem.

Try supporting 150+ systems, and then tell me what you think.

are those 150+ systems being used by ignorant/novice computer users? cause that can tend to fuck an OS up.

I bet if you stuck a complete computer noob in front of a linux sytem and let him go buck wild, that poor pc would be asking for an asprin too.

I'm just venting, Edogg. I think it's somewhat irresponsible to make an OS as complicated and flaky as Windows can be available to the general public, especially when you're marketing it as "Easy" and "Simply Point and Click!"

I think they should heard all those Marekting majors into a room and flail them with salt-encrusted wiffle-ball bats.

It's also a mistake to release it with as many security holes as it has, and I'm not just talking obscure securirty issues like what Blaster exploited. I'm talking about the insane vulnerability of Internet Explorer to Spyware, ActiveX scripts, Search Engine hi-jackers and so on, not to mention just Good ole' poorly written software/drivers.

It's enough to drive me frikin insane.

P.S. I may be making a decent coin from this living, but it would nice for once if something that I fixed worked correctly for at least a week before it got fucked up again.

Zog, you need Deep Freeze on your 150 workstations. I think my tech and I would be dead without it.

Every shop I mentioned it to tried it and then bought it, including my local university.

The pimpletards here at school have tried everything, they never succeeded in breaking any one of my 120 Windoze machines.

One of my larger clients has that application, but it's difficult to setup to allow Windows Updates, Virus updates, etc.

Plus, a lot of my clients are residents (and their frigin kids are the #1 cause oif all my headaches). Half the battle is convincing Johnny-snot nose that that shit he's constantly downloading and installing isn't doing him any good...and that "Zany" Internet Explorer toolbar doesn't do a damn thing except track his every move and clogg up his resources.

Customers don't like their machines to be locked down or controlled (that's why they call them personal computers, I guess).

I'm just burnt out. This industry is the Snake Oil of the 21st Century...and guys like me end up holding the proverbial bag when half the shit doesn't work as promised.

Why isn't Windows more modular??? They'v setup directories that save each individual users' files, settings, security, templates, etc...but you can't just grab that and plug it into a fresh system and be off and running.

That would make all these other problems moot.

I spend 4 hour setting up four laptops with unique and individual settings (no domain controller, no roaming profiles). I got everything just right; Host name, e-mails, Signatures, backups, alm Pilots, Dial-up settings....and two days later I come back the "USers" had all changed machines because of odd reasons. Now different users are using other user's machines, e-mails are all effed up and I'm forced with keeping them as is or spending another four hours recreating everything fromn scratch.

Johnny Snot-Nose's files are now under a folder called "Deborah Dumbass" in the "Documents and Settings" mess.

Imagine what confusion that will cause in the near future?

Ugh...I digress. Thanks for letting me vent, guys.

By the way, that 150+ indicates households and businesses...each with an average of 4 PCs (more for the big businesses)...so I'm physically supporting more than 300 Windows-based PCs.

This is why piracy is so prevalent.... people know they're getting ripped off and do something about it...

Piracy is a giant, sandpaper covered, steel toed boot right in Microsoft's cornhole... look at the lengths that they go to to try to stop it, but to no avail... pirates just take it as a challenge and figure another way around it...

So don't fret zog, my humble IT geek, pirates of the world are getting back at Bill and co. right where it hurts... the wallet...

YYYAAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Your're right about the snake oil... I think in 20 years or so IT will be a science, but right now it's more like alchemy or sorcery. One day we'll look at the present state of IT and we'll laugh.

BTW, you should read "Silicon Snake Oil", by Cliff Stohl.

See ya all, I'll be AFK until Wednesday. Going to the beach!

No, idiots, not Omaha.

I get tired of taking the blame for other people's stupidity.

When I come across a problem I try the most logical steps to fix it, which often times doesn't fix it. So I end up spending way to much time troubleshooting only to find out it's either something totally unrelated (Media Player upgrades can prevent further Internet Explorer upgrades??? Now that makes sense!).

People look at me like I'm the problem. They never realize that they have control over a PC for a lot longer than I do, and it's hardly my fault for trying to decipher what the hell they did to get the machine in the state it's currently in.

Plus, let'sa face it...Windows is a petri dish for malcontents. It's a launching board into people's personal lives...security breaches, vulnerabilities and blatant stupidity and bad code writing make it easily altered (Registry anyone?).

Argh.
