- Tour of Duty
well, I think it all started with real abbrevations, like: asap.
But I think it is also because of the film Saving Ryan.
Almost everybody knows FUBAR. So some lazy guy with no work, and hanging 20 hours a day behind his computer, made that kind of words ( lol, roflmao, lmao).
And how about ToD??? it means 2 things: it is german for 'dead', but it also stands for TourofDuty

What idiot started stupid "words" like teh, pwned, and others =\ ?
Maladjusted, mouthbreathing, uneducated, knuckledragging quarterwits who speak moron as their first language, retard as their second and english as a last resort...
I have no problems with smilies, as they're pretty funny sometimes, but people who use those kinds of Leet-speak "words" on a regular basis should be hung from their scrotums in dark basements until gangrene takes their genitalia...
No, maybe that's a little harsh... a good caning from a martial arts expert would suffice as punishment...

Actually, I think it came from the techies/geeks that were on the Internet way before most people. As most of you techies/geeks know, acronyms are huge in day-to-day activities. I can remember most of the acronyms listed being used when I first connected to the Internet in '88. At that time, there really wasn't a WWW to speak of. Archie, Veronica, WAIS, gopher, FTP and lots of chat were how things were done....
Now the l337 speak... I don't know who thought up that $h17...

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in the boat and drink beer all day...
It mostly started in the forebears of irc, like the chat program on the VMS systems on DECNET. Can't remember the name. That was before the Internet.
IMHO is "in my humble opinion".

Do youmean ARPANET. If my history is correct (and I do suffer from CRS;) ), ARPANET preceeded the Internet. It was a joint venture (for lack of a better word) between universities and government entities...
And, yes, chat was huge. Especially, back in the day when access to the "Net" was limited to moderate speed access from universities and government or low speed dialup for the rest of us.....

wait. what is pwned??
My understanding is that it started with a typo on the Halo webpage when it was first gaining popularity. It was intended to be "owned", but "p" was accidentally hit instead of "o." I guess it kind of caught on an adapted to everything. It is weird though.
