Upside: Samsung says that the SyncMaster 172X has a 12ms pixel-response time, making it the first LCD fast enough for gaming, viewing and editing video, and tackling precise graphics work. It also has three separate brightness modes for viewing text, streaming video, games, and multimedia.

Downside: Manufacturers are notoriously optimistic about their specs, and each vendor has its own method for measuring pixel-response times. Whether the SyncMaster 172X will actually deliver a CRT-caliber performance remains to be seen. In any event, it won't be cheap, with a $599 estimated retail price.

Outlook: There will be plenty of less-expensive 17-inch LCDs on the market. But if the SyncMaster 172X lives up to its 12ms pixel-response spec, it will finally allow hard-core gamers, digital-video editors, and movie buffs to leave their CRT baggage behind and join us in the LCD future.

If there is one thing that I learned while working in computer's, it's that LCD screens will never compare to CRT monitors when it come's to high speed graphical representation. The bottom line is in order for the LCD to display pictures, it has to physically move liquid to generate such pictures. This takes time, thus creating the bad graphics on high frame rate applications. CRT monitors are much better, and will be for years to come.

12 ms sounds good, but does it have 32 bit support? LCD's that have response times that are that fast usually can't go above 16 bit color
