I fuck with them all the time and go in to delete stuff that Windows refuses to like Messenger. It is a pretty big mess in there though.

Out of the 1,000 sub-folders, 997 are almost always empty so why even put them there?

Heh. I was messing with my StyleXPService installation and I accidentally disabled it thus rendering the hacked .dll useless to Windows. It wouldn't let me logon to my account because of a damaged or missing file.

I decided to repair/reinstall Windows - but that gave me a fatal error. So I had to reinstall Windows totally. Fun. I'm out of commission for the next day or two at ECGN.

Update: I'm such a dumbass.

When i reinstalled windows I told it to leave my file system intact - and I was wondering why I had half a hard drive left. All my files are still here.

I accidently deleted a boot file because I was trying to make Homer Simpson eating a dougnut the background instead of the Windows XP screen with the green bar scrolling across, and now it uses some .ini file to boot. I should really fix this, but it works and I would probably mess it up more to making it freeze while trying to post.

lol ummm I used to just delete random files, just because I needed space, that was when I was running circa 91

an IBM Aptiva

386 running at a whopping 33 mhz (lol)
2 megs of ram
no cd, no sound card
and a huge 80 meg hard drive (lol)

cost me 2500 back then, I did add a sound card (sound blaster-with 3 1/2 " speakers), added 2 more megs of ram for $286.00 to run Dark Forces (lol)......lol those were the days running dos to play the orginal railroad tycoon

cd /railroadtycoon
rails (lol) I still remember those commands, windows was never used for gaming it was a ram hog, I remember the first real windows game was win 95's game Hive anyone rem. that????

If you get in a bind and your OS is unbootable, use Knoppix Linux to access hdd. It runs off CD (no install needed) and can be used to back up your data or to repair files. It can read/write FAT32, but read only on NTFS.

ERD Commander does it all though.

Evan & Sellout sounds like you both made the same error.

Sellout the file you messed up is the ntoskrnl.exe file found in the windows\system32 folder.

I think you both did wrong was copied it while in normal operation mode. Which has windows file protection on for certain extension, like .dll, .exe, .sys and acouple others.

To get around this so windows doesnt revert to the original reboot and hit F8 to go into safe mode and then change those file with those extension and then reboot in normal sound fix it.

Also sellout if you got service pack 1 then your want to use the file ntoskrnlSP1.exe but rename it to ntoskrnl.exe so you dont have any problems.
