Do you guys here the sound of the violin playing the saddest tune imaginable?
I pray(not really) for you sad and poor souls that dont realize that we are depleting mother Earth as you read this. We'll consume every bit till there is no more to make money off of. Just what big business wants is your enthusiam for space exploration so they can remain BIG business. They've created a racve of zombies that can't make their own decisions in the land of the "free", and yet the box remains on your head blind to it all. Space Exploration
. I say take care of home before you go anywhere else. Besides half the money they say they spend on space exploration is going into government offical's back pockets. Once again i say Thers no place like Mother Earth. -frost

That's why I say, let the businesses go for it, let our government spend our billions of dollars elsewhere. Imagine if Bush started up a favorable environmental plan with that money.....

Little extreme man, but you do have a point. Point is, the Earth has been here much longer than we have, and will in all probability will be here after we're gone (either by our own design or from the natural cycle of extinction).
Yeah, it'd be cool to colonize the Moon or Mars or something, but we can barely sustain people living in the artic circle, the desert, or at high altitudes.
And there's very very little chance any human will ever leave our own solar system, and even if we did there wouldn't be many places to go.
The best thing to do would be to just to better maintain Earth, rather than look to the stars.
I have nothing against the current space program though, and if anything it needs more funding. Our budget for stuff that's ambigous like "defense" is huge. Do we really need all those aircraft carriers or jets or whatever? But that's another arguement altogether.

eh... sorry, but this was supposed to be a response to another thread that was started by someone else about the whole mars exploration. I guess i forgot how to do things since i havent been here for like a year now.
Really i was trying to find a post about me, that Ben Frank posted bad mouthing me, anyone know where its at, i'd like to know?

Here I was trying to be nice and polite to Cappricio in the other thread and he goes and says something as dumb as that.
Try looking outside of the blinders you have on. How about we go out into space, move all that nasty polluting industry that so many environmentalists think is ruining the earth up there, and turn the earth into a giant frigging park! Gee think of that? We could provide for peoples needs, enjoy a high standard of living, and still grow! WOW what a concept.
Oh yeah and take care of the earth at the same time.
And nice anti-capitalism bashing there lord frost but you are wrong, Hoping forces in society you don't like will go away is pretty stupid (See Neville Chamberlain here) You need to to realize that you need to take advantage of the "evil" corporate people and direct them in ways that work towards a good end goal for all.

Uh, how about the billions of other galaxies, and trillions of other solar systems, not to mention uncountable planets out there?

For one. if you care so much about harming the environment, stop buying PCs. Do you realize how many destructive, corrosive chemicals are released into the environment when a PC is thrown away, let alone manufactured?
One day, I hope, you will realize that any society, no matter how agrarian, requires hard work and will have some effect on the environment. If you really care, you won't be a leach, reaping the benefits of a culture you curse, and instead toss your lot in with the rest of us and try to make this world a better place as a productive member of society.
And please, cool down, you'll find people will actually pay attention to what you say if you present it with civility and courtesy. A little reason and evidence usually help, too.

I'd have to say that extinction may be a natural part of evolution, but to have any species become extinct from the direct influence by human beings is not to be sloughed off.
From what I've read the ozone hole over the artic hasn't gotten any smaller.
Also, over-population and pollution have all contributed to increasing the average mean temperature of the planet drastically over the past 100,000 years. The green-house affect is real, and probably our most daunting problem.
The only other thing that has grossly impacted the environment so quickly are catastrophic disasters (meteor strikes, etc.). Human beings have the unique distinction of having as drastic an impact on the environment in as short a time as events that usually occur every 10 million years or so.
If anything space exploration has pointed out to us how delicate our planet's current environment is, and how rare a situation we have here.
Venus is a prime example of a run-away Green-House Affect. Mars is an example of a depleted ozone and unsubstantial atmosphere.
Resources here on Earth are not limitless. The environment is not immune to gross exploitation. The only life form on this planet that has the ability to realize these potential problems is also, ironically, the only life form responsible for shamelessly exploiting its ONLY habitable home.

Yeah, hehe, I did think see that and had wondered what I had meant when I typed it.
I mean that in any foreseeable future there isn't much real possibility of us going anywhere important. Space is called "space" for a reason. It's big, and it has a lot of cool stuff in it, trillions of stars and galaxies and planets, but mostly it's just . . . space. It's so big it's beyond any imagining.
According to what we know now, faster than light propulsion (heck, even light speed propulsion) is fundamentally and theoretically impossible. But yeah.
And Ingus, I assume your comments towards me are based on what I said about "defense" spending. Yeah, it's important. But what I was infering is what I've heard about the future of our armed serives. Maybe you can correct me in my ignorance, but currently and in the future most military operations are conducted on relatively small scales. Special forces type stuff, not your full scale 200,000 cruise missle attacks and whatnot. (sorry, I know this is kinda coming off as a little halfbaked, but stay with me). So, I'm just curious why we need all these weapons, when as the country with the most technologically advanced military in the world we can made do with smaller numbers of more elite units.
Why use a tank when it all you need is a squad of a dozen men with all the best equipment? So, budgeting could be done better, maybe, if that's the case, just as it can be done better for things such as education and medical care and heck, the space program.

Or I just know a lot about our solar system, and I'm just pessimistic. Maybe someday, in thousands of years, we'll do it. But then where will we go? The nearest star system? Nothing important there, for all we know. And it's extremely far. No, wait. From here to New Zealand is far. From here to Mars is very, very far. From here to Pluto is insane. From here to the edge of our solar system is twice as insane. From here to anywhere else out there we may want to go? The distance is unimaginable. From our present viewpoint, of course. That's all I'm saying.
So, hopefully it was all just a misunderstanding. (Although I'm still a little ticked at you making fun of my face over in that joke thread
