I can understand some people thinking that. Now, if the electoral college were done away with, that would be different. I live in VA, VA (despite the Dem Gov.) is pretty much mostly Rep. Normally voting Dem in VA is like burning money. Useless. The reverse is true in many states. I think the electoral college is a crock.

EDIT: I don't mean to say that I don't vote, just that I haven't yet due to my age last election. This time I will of course.

By RCglider:
The Cycle of Democracy (ed. in the U.S., a Representative Republic)

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.
:

First: We are a Republic, not a democracy. In a democracy one man has one vote. In a Repbulic we vote for our representatives who are supposed to for the masses. (I wonder how often this happens?) (Sorry just noted you corrected yourself)

Second: My former boss was a very creative, visionary man. (God rest his soul.) It was his opinion that if you worked for the government OR received government support, you should NOT be allowed to vote. Because if you worked for, or received benefits from the government, you would not vote for smaller government. You would only hurt yourself if you voted for smaller government. (I hope that made sense.)

So... I'm saying that I agree with RCglider and the rest. Eventually our government will fail, due to the redistribution of wealth and the fact that more and more people vote for government handouts, or work for the government.

All I have to say is I think this year I finally won't have to pay!! my daughter was born on Dec 30 so I can claim her and I just bought a house in 2003 so MAYBE I won't have to pay out this year and might actually get some of my tax money back. as for RCglider's quote, just goes to show that history does repeat it self and always will. Sorry to say but I believe the Mighty US will fall one day as did the Roman Empire. Enjoy it while it lasts

Great post RCglider.

I make pretty good money but I let Uncle Sam give me a check back each year due to being undisciplined. I know this is not the smartest thing to do but I'm a realist. Plus with a decent return a computer upgrade is a lock.

As Neal Boortz (nationally syndicated radio talk show host) is fond of saying "If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can always count on the support of Paul." So as the Demoncrats will keep the poor in bondage by giving them small morsels from my plate, I continue to vote Republican.

Hehe, agreed sonar. It's not a refund, just money that you worked hard for and was taken from you. :D

Hehe I know :). In fact, I realize that the government has already taken its percentage from the "refund". Sort of like how banks have some believe that their savings are secured and untouched when in reality it itself is being used to produce revenue through loans and loan interest. But it does psychological wonders for the ignorant. :).

Maybe the Democratic party will implode soon and the GOP can get back to basics. Spending is out of control. The political fighting isn't helping anyone anymore. Politics is getting beyond brutal.

I don't think it can even be called politics anymore.

Nostradamus if I recall right saw another great war in the U.S.(Civil War) this time east vs west. Sounds about right, liberials vs conservatives.

I mean no offense, but do you understand the purpose of the electoral college?
Basically, it prevents the country being dominated by a few large states, i.e. tyranny. Look at the map from the 2000 vote and it's plain to see why the framers did it. We don't live in a direct democracy and for good reason.

RC, Xenius didn't say he wanted to do away with the electoral college, just that theres little reason to vote in his state while it exists. I live in Texas so who do you think will win in the upcoming election?
