Trigger port vs. Public port

Postby Kurith » Fri Apr 09, 2004 3:48 pm

I have this game I'm trying to play, and I like to play online and I need to open ports to do so. I know what ports to open, and I know how to get to where I need to enter the port numbers.

But I've run into a bit of a snag. I have a SpeedStream router and when I go to open ports I get the get 2 columns to enter text (port numbers) and after each there are 2 buttons "UDP and TCP" I know its UDP.

One of the ports I need to open is "5120 to 5300" but I only have 10 spaces to enter ports, and the trigger ports wont let me type "5120 to 5300" or "5120 - 5300" but the "Public Port" text thing will let me do that. My question is, is which do I use, I'm thinking common sense says the Public Port box, but then what is the Trigger Port box for?

Do we have a networker in the house?

screenshot to clarify.

Edit: oops cropped out the labels, the short box is the Trigger port box and the long box is the public port box

Use public port.

Trigger port automatically forwards ports if a certain application, which you specify by exe, asks for access on that port.

Are you sure you need to open ports to play that game? Normally you only do that if you want to run a server.

Anyway, your screen shots look very much like SMC's "special application" screen. It's used for certain tricky servers like FTP, which need to open multiple ports for incoming traffic when triggered by a connection on a control port. For example, to run a FTP server behind my firewall, I put 21 as the trigger port, and the range 23580-23582 as the public port. Then I configure my FTP server to use range 23580-23582 as data ports. So, when clients connect to my FTP server on port 21, they will send/receive data thru ports 23580-23582.

It's possible your game is like that, but you need to know the trigger port, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Ah! That makes sense. What is the normal port given for that game? BF1942, for instance, is 14567.

5120 to 5300, 6500

and then the game spy ones 27900, 28900
(the game unfortunaly is based of off gamespy's server thingy so I basicly have to use it)

edit: those are the ones that the game site says I need open; I notice when I tried to host a game the port is set to 5121

When you try to join a server, on what port is it?

Wouldn't trigger port be better if you only want the port open for when you run a program?
