I still remember some of those old Carnac bits ...
Holding the envelope to his head:
"A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou."
Reading the contents of the envelope:
"Name three things that have yeast."
"May a dog in heat romance your shin for the month of September".

He was really the last link between the recent past and that old school vaudville style variety hour that died out in the 50s/60s
I used to love watching Carson re-runs after school when I was a teenager.
For those that never heard of him, he had a variety show that aired late at night, it was mix of different things, interviews with celebrities or other interesting people, musical acts, comedy skits, stand up comedians, along with occasional Circus style perfomers (juggling, animal acts, etc)

moment of silence for the king of latenight and an epic commedian. Daddy Bob is gone and now Uncle Johnny. Cos is getting on up there in years too.

found out last night that up till real recently he's been writing for David Lettermen.
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.

That would be typical of the way he played people. Teased dave for years about taking over the show. Then hands it over to Leno, only to write for dave.
None the less he was good at what he did.

Actually, he wanted David Letterman to take over the show, but the network overruled him. 
This is the reason why he sent his material to Dave instead of Leno.
Dave would have made a great replacement!
