Bush signed off on a plan to release oil from emergency stockpiles, a decision intended to offset the loss of production from Gulf Coast refiners.

Johnson had issued the waiver for the four storm-damaged Gulf states on Tuesday but said the broader move was necessary "to ensure that fuel is available throughout the country, to address public health issues and emergency vehicle supply needs."

Additionally, Bodman said the Transportation Department had waived rules governing trucker hours, a step he said would increase the supply of gasoline."

There are only so many reserves out there, so your estimation on when we're going to be screwed over if we don't do something about this issue is in no way unrealistic. We simply can't maintain the same level of consumption for another 50 years unless some insane amount of undiscovered reserves are found. Even then, we'd be dealing with rising superpowers that will want a bigger slice of the pie.

A = we consume too much gas
B = we rely on too many exports

There's no way to achieve B until we solve A... and sadly I can't see any hope for "A" getting resolved within the next 10 years. It sounds pessimistic but this SUV infatuation makes me bitter.
