Looks as though Chevy used the civic as something to base their new car off of :freak:

Everybody wants a peice of the white-hip hopper market. Those cars are like hotcakes in suburban america since they are the perfect materialization of teenage angst. Long live rediculously loud bass boxes, lame spoilers, cars so low they slow down for pebbles, completely out of place race car speedometers and unnecessary tire screeches. Linkin Park and Tu Pac will forever be remembered through the materials these cars are made of.

Don't forget the lame loud mufflers, nothing like the rumble of a four banger cruisin High Street.

It might be that they are manufacturing or designed it for Chevy. Many manufacturers do this. The Geo prism is a Toyota Corolla, many Lexus vehicles are also made by Toyota.

Lexus IS toyota. Its the same company. Its their luxury line. Just like Acura is just a luxury line of Honda.

Btw....for those who dont know.....

Lexus stands for Luxury EXport for the US

They came out with the line to compete with BMW and Audi.

The best why to find out is buy one, then if it has engine problems and falls apart after 3 or 4 years, it's definitely a pure bred Chevy.

We build test machines for practically all auto manufacturers, and I can assure you Ford is not above the fray.

If you have anything GM up to and including 2003 with a 3.1/3.4 Liter engine, they have big problems with intake gaskets leaking. No recall in force so if out of warranty will cost about $800-1000.
http://www.gm-v6lemons.com/

Chrysler has leakage issues too, so do Buick 3800's. Increased use of plastic engine components is the culprit in many cases, plus the mating of disimilar metals (ex. alum heads, cast iron block). However, one the best engines I've ever owned was a Buick 3800 (pre plastic days, cast iron heads/block).

Ford has had some big time recall issues for mechanical problems. Their new 6 speed auto trans will be in production very soon. Time will tell how that turns out. GM will have their version next year.

So, although I would agree American cars have been making improvements over the past 10-15 years, it's not as rosey as the picure they paint. American 4 cylinders are still junk. Manufacturing processes have leap frogged, but that is not exclusive to company over another. It's design issues.

What I find interesting is American auto makers go to great lengths in enforcing specifications and regulations to their suppliers (QS 9000, ISO 9000 etc.), yet a company like Nissan does not; the same for other Japanese companies.

There are many secret recalls never reported.

Personally, I'd like to get something like a 1965 Dodge Dart with a slant 6, rebuild it from the ground up and drive it for 200k miles. If something goes wrong, at least it's easy to fix :P. I had to take a car to the dealer for the first time in my life this year. I nearly had a cardiac arrest when I got the bill.

In another year or so I plan on buying my 'white trash' dream car: I'd like to get a mid 70's era Corvette, candy apple red of course. It's the car I wanted when I was just kid, and these days they don't really cost too much, 12-15k or so. I am gonna suck up the embarassment and just indulge my inner child :)

Be aware of your local inspection regs when looking into any car. In Mass it's become quite a nightmare.

Hmmm... if you want a modern car that runs a long time, get a Volvo (note: dunno about the newer ones). My moms 940 has 180,000 on it and the mechanic who works on it says it can go to 500,000 easy...

All Lexus's are Toyota's, as Toyota owns Lexus. It is their high end line. Acura is Honda's high end line. Infinity is Nissan's high end line.

EDIT: Apparently Heart Collector already posted this.

Intersting thing with Lexus is that they have not been sold in Japan. Their first car for Japan was either just offered or will be shortly.
