Lookin' for a flight sim...

Postby Jeffro » Mon Feb 16, 2004 3:31 pm

What, in your honest opinion, is the best flight sim to get...
whether it be for battle or not...(prefferebly battle though)

I like download custom aircraft so keep that in mind too! :)

Is fs2002 really better than fs2004? or vice versa..?

Fill me in on which sim or combat sim is the best..

Thank you

You might want to check out Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator. Not sure if it's any good or not since I've never played it

It's really, really, really hard. I'd recommend this only for people who are insistant on realism.

The best flight sim for online is Fighter Ace. Nothing compares if you like large online battles. The planes are very detailed and there's several dozen (if not hundreds) of models to choose from. It's pay to play though, and the guys there take it quite seriously. I had a lot of fun with Air Warrior III as the bombers would hold a full crew (7 in a B17), but it was discontinued by EA.
I have M$ Flight sim 2002 and yes it's hard. You have to know pilot lingo to fly online or you'll feel pretty out of place. It is fun though, but don't expect any fast action stuff....it's not battle oriented. Plus, the controls are quite complicated.
I bought IL2 when it first came out and played for quite a while, and there are many custom planes available. I haven't played the latest version.

Check out FlightGear. It's an open source, FREE flight simulator that is used by universities and research organizations.

Air Warrior III was awesome when it was around. My favorite position was tail gunner. Funny how none of the bombers I crewed were ever shot down. Hehe.

I remember the physics were a bit messed up for the B17 and they could turn like a fighter. It was hilarious to be a waste gunner in one battling it out with another B17 and a full crew. They ended up patching it so it couldn't be turned too much; it would just break up at that point. I was disappointed when EA trashed it.
The radios inside the planes were neat. You needed them for the long bombing runs that would sometimes last a 1/2 hour or more. I liked the ball turret myself, seeing the enemy fighters coming up underneath.
If planes could be loaded up with crew in Fighter Ace it would be really great. As it is now it's still a good game. One time I had two accounts. My son and I joined a squadron with 20+ P38's on a mission. It was quite a site to see all those planes taking off. It's not uncommon to see over 200 planes on one map (they are huge). Every kind of plane in WW2 is available.
Once BF42 came out I pretty much stopped flying sims, but kept one account for my son. I still can't get used to the way the planes fly compared to FA etc. Oh well.

In your opinion, is FA worth the monthly fee?

I've never played AH, so it may be worth a try. I can't believe how small the download is; 35mb?? FA is like 400mb.
I couldn't find much info on how the game works as far as teams etc. Is it country vs country? FA has several rooms you can join or create your own. I usually played in the territorial combat which entailed 5 countries: Germany, Japan, England, US, Russia.
FA had a 2 week free for all in December, but don't know if there's a trial now. How many players can play at one time in AH?

For Evan, IMO if you like large online games that require team coordination, FA is worth the money. The plane selection is awesome. It's best to join a squadron and learn the ropes, although you can be a loner if you want. I suspect it's the same for AH.

Try them both. I think I'll try AH to see how it compares.

I remmeber there being 300-500 depending on the night. There are not really countries, there are 3 teams. Bishops, the Knights, and the Rooks.

"Territory is gained by capturing a field. A field consists of an airfield, vehicle field, or port and an adjacent town. The town is situated 2-3 miles from the field or port and contains the strategic map room for the entire field. All buildings in the town must be destroyed before attempting to capture the field. Destroyed town buildings will stay down for 45 minutes, during which time 10 troops must be delivered to the map room via one of the troop carriers to capture the field. After the tenth troop safely makes it into the map room, a system message will appear in the message buffer announcing the captured field number and the capturing country."

Here is all the info.

Lock On has been great fun. If you like modern fighter sims. Lots of online players too. Check it out. Also, use this tool to find online games.

It also works really well with IL2 Forgotten Battles. Another great flight sim.
