Far Cry released and patched

Ubisoft sends Crytek's PC FPS to stores just days before its first update.
Lovers of PC shooters got a new weapon for their arsenals today after Ubisoft shipped Far Cry to stores. Developed by German studio Crytek, the game is rated "M" for Mature and retails for $39.99.

Far Cry is one of the year's most anticipated entries in the first-person shooter genre, and much has been made about the game's graphics, which boast over a kilometer of relative draw distance.

Story-wise, the game follows a former soldier who wakes up on a tropical island that's been overrun by mercenaries who are guarding genetic labs, which foster even more-deadly enemies. Naturally, it's up to the ex-commando to put a stop to said paradisaical evildoing while preserving his own skin. For more on the game, read GameSpot's full review.

Ironically, the ship announcement was promptly followed by news of Far Cry's first patch. The patch will be released this Thursday, and it will resolve compatibility issues between the US and Canada, as well as repair multiplayer damage issues. Ubisoft will release an online tutorial for Far Cry's Sandbox editor tomorrow, in addition to a quick-save patch in mid-April.

From playing it, I don't think MP would be it's strongpoint. The SP is freaking awesome.

I don't know about SP mode....

In the demos, I tried something different. Instead of finding my way to them, I let them come to me. On the second demo, I decided to take a small swim to a little island just east of where you start. I took one sniper shot, taking out a guy and then watched all the rest of them on the beach come to me. I just waited with the MP5 until the AI started to 'try' to swim to me...but all they would do is stop waist-deep in the water. I just took my MP5 and head-shot them all until all were gone from the beach and then I just walked to the tunnel, picking up what I wanted all the way.

Nice graphics and such, but the AI seems like an average 'spankytard' player.

Good AI is hard to come by nowadays for some reason... Half-Life had some of the nastiest AI I've ever played against.

I remember the days of playing GoldenEye on the 64, the guards would chase you and if you pulled it off correctly, you could trick them into standing in the corner doing nothing.

I thought that second demo was hard. The first demo only took a few minutes to make it up the hill but I couldn't get anything going in the second demo. I thought I read that they had a third demo to release.

Have you played Unreal2? I've been tricked by the AI more than once in that one, or had one guy draw my fire, while 3 others snuck around and blew me away from behind. One of the best AI's I've ever come across.

Naw, I was actually (and don't tell anybody I told you this!) computerless for a good stretch between 1999 and 2002ish, so I think I missed out on a good number of games.

In fact, Half Life was the last FPS I played before my stint of not having a computer (on the PC, I still played games on PS and PS2).

I'm more disappointed with the AI in RTS and turn-based strategy games than I am with FPSs. You'd figure the RTS would be able to devote more CPU to AI, but nooo..

Don't complain about AI until you play Vietnam AI. Terrible!

Anyway, I picked this game up today.

I'm still skeptical about it. I didn't like the AI because of some problems. The graphics are stunning however and if anyone makes a game based in WWII Pacific or in Vietnam with the Cry Engine, well I'm sold. Still, the whole "one man takes on an entire island of mercs and mutant monsters" concept just doesn't fit my bill. I want squad combat in my single player games... I guess CoD spoiled me a bit with it.
