Thermal Paste?

Ok heres the deal I just got a brand spanking new amd 3000+ xp. I want to install it but I'm still a little confused as to whether or not I need to add that thermal paste stuff or if I just need to remove that cover thingy and tape on the fan and its already on there????:confused: Oh and thermal paste is the same as "Thermal Interface Material" correct?

Ive always had someone else install my CPUs so sorry if this is a dumb question, I just want to be positive before I install this thing as money dont grow on trees you know.

If there's a little brown pad thingy on the bottom of the HSF, you do not need paste. I imagine that if you needed paste, it would have been included with your cpu..

Well I've been watching all kinds of videos on it and I think I dont need paste as there is something already on the heatsink.

Now I'm just trying to install the godamn thing and ripping my hair out. Who the #$%#% designed this clamp shit I got the big clamp design with 3 holes in it and its a pain in the ass to get in . Hell I probably already broke the damn thing already. I'm almost at the point where I take a damn hammer to the thing.

Ok f#$k this now I do need thermal paste because i freakin give up andthe shit that came on there is all f#$ked up now. I dont know if its the heat or what but I'm about to go on a killing spree or some shit.

Thanks anyway I'll just get someone else to do this bs for me in a few days. Till then I'll just use my bros comp muhahahahaha. :ar15:

Take a shmoke break and a open a beer. After that take a look at it again. It can be frustrating. You don't need alot of paste. Just a lil film that can be applied actually with a razor blade. Too much is a bad thing. So you can salvage what what on the heat sink and reapply it.

Take your time setting the sink. You'll get it.

Thermal paste gives better heat transfer, especially the aftermarket ones..... AMD uses a TIM-pad (thermal-interface-material) b/c it's idiot proof (you can't put on too much or too little, they've already done it.

How'd you manage to kill the pad?

Owell, so long as you didn't crack the core (which you'd see), the chip is probably fine. Yes, those clips are a pain, which is why my heatsink bolts to the motherboard, much easier IMO.

I like Intel's HSF design, it just clips into place instead of using AMD's clamps. Though I prefer AMD CPU's

Is the top of your proc silver? I'm not sure if your version of the amd has a silver metal heat spreader on the top of the processor or it has the exposed chip.

If it has the exposed chip be very carefull. I know this sounds dumb but try to apply even pressure as you press down.

get some decent thermal paste (not the cheap crap from Radio Shack), only need a small dot in the middle of the chip. It doesn't take much. Otherwise you'll end up with a big mess and it can ooze all over the cpu. Then it's hard to clean up, which means AMD will be able to tell you didn't use authorized thermal tape and void the warranty

Get a cpu shim. That will prevent you from damaging the cpu.

I use Ceraminique paste.

According to the retail version, it is the CPU DIE itself.

rt evan. then a shim would be nice as mentioned. I use Artic Silver 2 for a thermal paste. But he should have plenty left from the pad that was on the heat sink. It only takes a super thin layer.

I use arctic silver 5 as well and if you set it up right it can do wonders for your cpu temps.

Heh, my CPU averages ~20c hotter than my mobo temp - but I think that my sensors are wacky.

Mine does too. I don't think it is anything to be concerned about. The mobo temp sensor on my mobo is on the front lower corner. This puts it at the bottom of my case and it is the closest part of the mobo to the two intake fans I have at the front/bottom of my case. My mobo temp runs about the same as room temp or maybe 1-2C more because it is recieving constant outside air. The CPU temp is 18-22C higher usually. So if room temp gets up to 27C, my CPU temp is still 50C or less which is fine.

Havoc, AMD64 chips have an IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader), much like the P4's. All prior athlons had exposed dies, so damaging the core is possible.
