Storm Trooper Armor--WTF?

Postby cavalierlwt » Thu Apr 29, 2004 4:49 pm

I know it's kind of a weird topic, but talking with a friend about military body armor and the ultra cool looking armor that the Storm Troopers wore in Star Wars(the original trilogy of course!)
My friend made the point, that as cool looking as the Storm Trooper's gear was, it was also completely useless. It doesn't seem to protect them at all! Every time someone shot at the Storm Troopers they dropped like flies. Pistols, rifles, those frigging Ewoks and their frigging little booby-traps---all completely defeated the 'armor' of the Storm Troopers. What's the deal with that? Is their armor just 'for show'?
Just thought some of you fellow Star Wars geeks might appreciate the topic.

The armor was designed, not to stop being hurt, but to reduce the lethality of the shots.

According to the books I've read in the Star Wars line, the armor was used to reduce the impact and damage of shots to improve the survivability being shot.

Forget the armor what about the training, those troopers can't shoot for shit. Maybe if they spent more money on training and less on fancy armor they might not have got beaten by a bunch of little dwarf teddy bears, just a thought.

Normal troopers can't shoot for shoot in the movies, however in the books they are very lethal. Don't forget about the elite troopers though.

I agree with the training remarks. Here's undeniable proof that the Storm Troopers were unexpierenced:

Watch the original Star Wars. The part where the Storm Troopers come in that room and C-3PO and R2-D2 are hiding, one of the troopers hits his head on the door that doesn't open all the way. It's the one with the arrow.

LOL at the trooper bumping his head on the doorway.
Yeah, they probably don't train too hard, it's probably a thankless job, the kind where you just do your time and get out ASAP.
I love the scene in Star Wars where the two STs are guarding that little control tower just before Obi Wan sneaks in. If you turn the volume up and listen to them shoot the breeze it's a real hoot.

Very good point Cavalierwt. As far as I can remeber the armor never protected a storm trooper from anything.

Yeah, all bad guys are *horrible* shots. In any given movie the good guys can usually just get about 50 feet ahead of them, duck down and have a quick conversation regarding strategy, who got who (whom?)into this mess, etc, all the while you can hear gun/laser shots whizzing overhead, never hitting anyone.

One they should have added:
Any power source that supplies energy to an important force field, will be contained *within* the force field that it generates power for.
